Subject: ? for the Xterra/MTBers out there: Maui Skyline Trail
Hey guys,

I'm heading to Maui for Xmas and I've been scouting out some potential MTB options. Living in Prince George, BC has its advantages in terms of sport but with wet season/winter I haven't been able to hit the trails for awhile.

Wondering if anyone has done the Skyline trail from the summit of Haleakala and can comment on difficulty? I'm able to ride blues around Prince George and have also done some blues in the West Kootenays, Silverstar and Van North Shore. Most of the stuff I can find online says black but due to some steep/loose sections vs gnarly gong show that I struggle with in BC--I tend to be okay with the smooth, steeps and corners...I feel I generally have good risk assessment and am okay to hop off the bike and take a few steps to avoid fracturing something!

There's also a new bike park on the island that I'm planning on checking out but the Skyline would be the biggie ride!

Thanks for any help/comments! Getting some off road in to prep for some Xterras next yr!

It's been years since I did Skyline Trail, what I remember is that it is pretty loose. I actually did better just letting go of the brakes and going fast. I saw some people tense up, brake and loose control!

Thanks for the heads up on the new bike park, adding that to the list for the next trip to Maui!

If you can rent a road bike, I would suggest doing the west loop ride (and bring plenty of water!). It's way scenic, challenging and just a fun ride. Here's my strava link to it from when I road it last year.

Enjoy! Let me know if you check out the MTB park!

I've been to Maui a couple of times, but I've never rode any of the mountain bike trails. I'm curious to the answers because the Skyline trail sounds like something that is possibly my skill level too. That said, it would be hard for me to go to Maui and bring a mountain bike instead of a road bike. There's some great road riding over there. I've ridden the West Maui loop probably 10 times, in both directions and it's great both ways. The east maui loop, once which is a great challenge. And Haleakala. There's also lots of shorter ride too.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm taking my road bike with me because the road riding is definitely the bigger bang for the buck on Maui, but I'll probably rent a mountain bike for a few days to check out the mountain side of things!

I'll update on the bike park, etc once I go! 17 days and counting!
