Subject: Alligators...
... thats what I swim like.

I just saw a depressing video of myself swimming, in which it became clear that I swim like an alligator. Not in the sense of being fearsome and commanding respect, but in the sense that, my legs seem to thrash from side to side as I go.

Are there any drills anyone can suggest to reduce that? The lifeguard on deck (who happened to be a swim teacher also) suggested focusing more on 'engaging the core', but it is unclear what exactly that means. I'm not a terribly slow swimmer (usually about 7minutes/400yds in sprint tris) but I do feel my form is poor, especially seeing myself on video.

see on that video if your hand is crossing over the center line. that causes the rear end to wander

My experience always tells me to look at the furthest point from the perceived issue. If you legs are swaying, more than likely your hands are the culprit. Try not to cross midline on your catch and rotate your shoulders as you extend for your hand entry, should help. Try it while using a pull bouy...helps with rotation.
