Expert 3145 Scottsdale, AZ | Subject: RE: How often do you race? I pretty much just run but the answer is going to be skewed depending on what season it is. Here in the SW it's prime running season so between shorter stuff (5ks, 10ks, etc) I'm probably racing 2-3 times a month. If there were more short, cheap options (like $20 5ks) I'd race weekly. |

Veteran 495 Calgary | Subject: RE: How often do you race? During the spring / summer racing season I typically do 3 - 4 races during a three month period. I enjoy the excitement and challenge of competition. I also like the motivation that it provides for training. I also really enjoy the camaradarie that comes from entering the same races as friends or family. (Hadn't realized it until I thought about your question, but 4 of the 7 races that I did from May - Oct this year, I entered because someone I know suggested it.) I have a few races that I like to enter every year so that I can compare my progress from one year to the next. So far this year - 3 running races, 1 tri, 1 Xterra tri, 1 duathlon and 1 Spartan race - so I guess that I like variety. Don Edited by donw 2014-12-15 1:36 PM |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: How often do you race? I usually do about four tri's during the May-to-October tri season. Mostly sprints, with an occasional Oly. I also do about 8 running races during the year, ranging from 5K's up to a half marathon each spring. I try to schedule things so I'm doing about one race per month over the course of the year. Part of that is that at age 61, I need about a week to fully recover from all-out race efforts these days. Mark

48 Los Angeles, California | Subject: RE: How often do you race? I did 1 sprint, 1 oly, 1 marathon and 1 ironman distance in August-December span. this was my progression from couch potato learning about triathlons to my first ironman distance so I mostly raced to see if I can finish. the only exception was a marathon where I actually was trying to see how fast I can go. Now that I know I can go the distance I probably will actually race less till I know I can make a major improvement in my time |

So far this year I've done 23 races (sadly only 2 tri's): 10 5k's, 3 10k's, 3 HM's, 1 25k trail race, 3 marathons, a 12 hour ultra, a couple of track meets (800m & 1500m), 1 sprint, 1 olympic

Expert 721 | Subject: RE: How often do you race? I overdid it this summer and burnt out- in a 9 week period I did a half marathon, 2 sprints, an oly, and a three day charity bike ride (45+ miles per day in the mountains). It was really hard to balance the different training needs over such a short period of time. I'll definitely plan more carefully in the future!

Member 622 Franklin, TN | Subject: RE: How often do you race? 3 shorter triathlons, a marathon, half marathon and a 10k. Not a big year. The marathon (my first) in April kind of screwed my early triathlon season. It was a bucket list item...when I do another it will be in the fall/winter. |

Member 560 Utah | Subject: RE: How often do you race? I typically try for one race a month through out the year, however, with doing IMTX in May taking most of the budget for races for the year, I will be cutting back to only 5 races for the year. All tris, and all local that don't require hotel or travel. I might do a half marathon in the fall, but we'll see. |

1055 | Subject: RE: How often do you race? A lot, but it's a mix depending on the time of year. 15 races this year: 2 sprints, 2 olympics, 1 HIM, 3 5ks, 2 10ks, 3 HM, 2 bike races. The way I figure it, what's the point of training 11 months of the year if you're not going to race. March - May is running season and I'll race as much as every other week. May to September is mostly tri season and I'll do one to two a month. September to December is the fall running season and again, it's usually every other week. I'll do back to back race weekends, but I try to minimize that unless I'm specifically trying to build to peak or I'm at a peak. |

Champion 10668 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: How often do you race? When I was in college and just starting out in triathlon (back in the mid- to late-80's), I only got to do one tri a year before I shipped off to Alaska to work the summers. Maybe a few running races in the fall. After college I hit tri hard, and within a couple years was doing a race almost every weekend, and sometimes 2 on a weekend. Sprints mostly, but with some Oly's in there as well. This was the late-80's and early 90's, and race distances weren't standardized. "Olympic" was just some one's dream at that point. Anyway, a lot of racing. And I was doing quite well. After several years my interests (and time requirements) shifted, and I got into bike racing as a way to focus the time. Well, within a short time of that I was putting in more training and racing even more often -- racked up 63 events in one year. Season was longer, and included mid-week races. Eventually I put that aside to try a business venture. Talk about a time suck! Anyway, after 7 years of that I walked away, got back into tri, and settled in at around 4 or so per year. Now, I do 2 or so a year, a scattering of fondo type bike events, and some other fun stuff. Not running much at all, and only swimming when I have to (like in the race). So I guess I've covered the spectrum in my... 30 years? of tri. It's been an adventure, and I wouldn't have it any other way. |

Regular 126 | Subject: RE: How often do you race? This was my heaviest race year 7 tris (1 oly, 6 sprints) all of the sprints were local. 6 bike races (all time trials) and 4 running events (2 5ks, a 10k and a half) I set PRs for every race I ran this year - pretty incredible as I look back actually Next year less racing for sure - will not do the entire time trial series as an example I need racing to make training worth while. Discussing taking a week plus long bike trek with the wife which cut into racing time. |

Expert 2555 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: How often do you race? I've done more than 40 races in a year. This year I'll have done only 8. Spent much of the year recovering from a broken fifth metatarsal that happened in a trail race late last year. I do it because racing makes me go much harder than training and I like to see where I stand with others in my age group. |

119 Groton, New York | Subject: RE: How often do you race? Races are expensive...so I don't do too many. The last couple of years I typically have one race that is a goal for the season and I throw in a couple of others as part of my training. Next year I'll start out in May with a Sprint Tri that I've done the last two years. I've got my "BIG" goal race in July, which will be my first HIM race. August will be an Oly tri that I've done the last two years...should be interesting to see how I do since it is about two weeks after the HIM. In October I am signed up for a marathon which I did for the first time this year as my goal race. I hope to clean it up and finish in better condition next year. So four races in total for next season. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: How often do you race? It totally depends on how my work committments and races line up. Last year I ended up doing only 5 or 6 races, and I think four were within a week of each other ( an international distance tri followed by a sprint, and a HM followed by a 5K, which really isn't ideal! ) This year I think I've done only four races--an international distance tri (about halfway between Oly and HIM), two Olys, and a pretty sucky HM (major heat issues from 10 km on,). There are very few races in Vietnam, and going out of country is really only doable if I take a personal day on Friday, the race falls on a school holiday or long weekend, or starts very early Sunday morning. Otherwise I'm doing something crazy like arriving at 1 AM and getting up at 5 the next morning to race. (Did it once, for an aquathlon.) I only get two personal days a year, so basically I am looking at 2-4 races per year in Asia, plus maybe one at home in the summer ( since I usually travel part of that time, and there are only a few tris near my hometown). I would definitely race more if I could get to races more easily--probably several sprints, a couple Olys, a longer tri, and a few run races in the 5K to HM range. Would also love it If I lived somewhere like Hawaii with OWS race series. I really like swimming longer distances (3-5 km) but haven't seen many chances to do that. Expert 2192 Greenville, SC | Subject: RE: How often do you race? Eh I just do whatever I want basically. I think this year I did 8 triathlons from Sprint to 70.3, 20 bike races which included road/crit/TT/TTT/CX, and 3 run races from 5k to HM. I do it because it's fun. Sure I can train more on all those weekends instead, but part of getting faster is getting to be able to enjoy crushing the hopes and dreams of my competitors at the local 5k or sprint triathlon. |

In my case, that would be for fun. I did my first triathlon as a personal challenge, I wanted to prove to myself I could do it. I also did my second for the same reason. At the third one, the stress level was much lower and I had even more fun then at the first two ones. Now I race for fun. I train all year long, the race is a reward for all those efforts I do. What were your motivations for your first race and how did you feel after it? Edited by Antoine tri 2014-12-16 12:56 PM |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: How often do you race? Since I just concentrate on bike racing, pretty often. From Oct-Feb, I regularly race one a week (3 races) at the velodrome and then throw in some other weekend races at the velodrome or some weekend cyclocross races in there too. From March-April, I race road races on most Saturdays and Sundays, so twice a week. Then from May-September, I race twice a week in our weekly crit training races, plus most weekends on either the road or the track, with a lot of weekends being 2-3 days of racing. That's bike racing for you though. |

My plan for 2015 is 5 tri's - 3 sprint, 1 oly and 1 HIM - plus the usual smattering of running races. Maybe 3-5 5k's, a 10k, and the same 4k trail race. |
