Pre-race routine:

Forcast all week called for rain and thunder showers for Sunday. I kept hoping for the best and that it would blow by or not even happen. No such luck. Saturday was really nice. Had a great quick swim in the lake and a spin on the bike. Went to bed ~10:30 with minimal precipitation occuring. Woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of rain. By the time my alarm went off at 4:00 it was pooring with rain. Rain was unrelenting all morning. Was completely drenched setting up the transition area. It was cold!

Luckily we had wrapped our bikes the night before. I placed all my stuff in plastic bags. In a futile attempt to stay warm, I got into my wetsuit about an hour before my start. Still ended up shivering. The race was delayed due to traffic getting into the race site and poor visibility on the water.
Event warmup:

Just tried to stay warm. Watched the earlier waves go. Joe, Dafna and I ended up biding our time out in the water by the start. The water, which the day before seemed cold, was by far the warmer option when compared to standing out in cool air. By race time, the raining had (temporarily) ceased.
Swim
  • 41m 30s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Even though my net time for the swim is higher than I'd hoped for, this was my most enjoyable swim in a race yet. I loved the lake water. Decent visibility and just enough chop to make it interesting. I felt in control throughout most of the swim. As always, the first few 100 yds can be frustrating with everyone trying to find their place. My navigation was really good. I swam straight. I successfully drafted for the first time--probably drafted off someone too slow. Catching and keeping up with those I drafted off of was way too easy. Next time I'll seek out faster feet!
What would you do differently?:

Look for quicker feet to draft off of. Otherwise, nothing (well, maybe learn to be a faster swimmer). I really enjoyed this swim!
Transition 1
  • 05m 23s
Comments:

All my biking stuff was shoved in a bag to stay dry, which slowed me down somewhat. Otherwise, this was one of my best T1's. No major problems getting off the wetsuit, and I felt surprising ready to run with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Given the rain, not much.
Bike
  • 2h 47m 15s

Comments:

I didn't train enough for this race in general--and definitely not enough for all the climbing!! The climbs wore me down big time. By the end of the race I was reduced to barely surviving any ascents in my granny gear (39/25). What's more, the rain started about 1/2 into the ride and progressively got heavier to the end. That made the descents a bit hairy. I'm so glad I didn't crash.
What would you do differently?:

Train for the hills! It would be awesome to be able to attack that course beginning to end and still have something left in the tank!
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

I'm happy with the T2 time. Again, I had to pull all my stuff out of a bag.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 1h 55m 21s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

I had nothing left for the run. Nothing. I always hammer as much as possible on the bike, and this ride left me totally flat. It was weird, my legs just woudn't move. I couldn't even get my heart rate to stay over 160. Usually, I have a hard time keep it under 170. So I just plodded along and watched the mile markers slowly tick off. I discovered the joy of drinking soda on the run. It sits way better than gatorade.

It was cool seeing Karen Smyers on her way in for her victory. I also saw Jorge Martinez (Amiine) on his way to a great finish.
What would you do differently?:

Train more for the bike so I have some energy to run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, grabbed some food and waited for my friends to come in. BTW, it was cold!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall lack of training for the bike segment obviously affected how I did on the bike, but also severely hindered my running segment.

Event comments:

Terrific organization! The race should be on anyones 'A' list!!

Nice race...for not training enough on the bike averaging over 20 mph is sweet!

Glad the weather didn't get you down to much...sounds like your swim was good compared to many others.

Congrats!

Bummer Ellen (TriMom217) brought the rain with her as she does to every tri she has done this year

Damn, Paul... GREAT race, especially since you don't feel you had the training in you wanted. CONGRATS on a fantastic finish!

Great race! Even though you're legs felt fried from the bike, you still put up a great run split. Just imagine how much better you will do next year, once you start biking on hills.

Wow, 20+ mph on the bike and 8:49 per mile on the run...good numbers especially considering the weather.  Sounds like a successful race to me!

Glad you enjoyed the swim -- surprisingly, so did I!  Straight swimming helps so much, especially in the chop.

I'd previewed the bike course in July (but on my old bike) so the hills were no surprise, and my new bike handled them pretty well, but the rain definitely kept me from going all out on the descents.  You seemed to handle them well though, as your bike mph is quite fast.  Nice 20+!!

Though the run course felt long, and my legs were like yours (just lacking their usual vigor), I think you still posted a great half-marathon time.  Way to go!

Great race! Sorry I didn't get to meet you--we must have been racked pretty close together. That bike course is a lot of fun--easy to go a bit too hard and make that last 13.1 more interesting.

Awesome race - you were really kicking butt on the bike and that was a great run time, especially as you were low on energy by that time! Congratulations on a great race!

Nice effort. I think we had similar races. Next time we'll both be a little more prepared for the bike and take some time off. Really solid race though!
