Changed my shoes from Nike air 360's to Asics and can't seem to go over 4 miles w/o my left ITB killing me. Could it be the shoes?

Most common cause according to my Phys. Therapist is just that... new shoes. Ditch the new ones before it gets worse and then take a couple of weeks of no- to very light training, but lots and lots of streching. And then go back to your old shoes before you invest in a new pair (preferably of the 360's if they worked for you)

I agree with Audiojan - ITBS can get very bad very quickly. Best to do what you can to prevent it now. Lots of stretching and very little running!

What is ITBS?

Count your blessings that you don't know and then go to google and type in ITBS. You'll get plenty of information.

BTW, it has nothing to do with Iowa Testing...

Yes, totally. If I wear shoes that overcorrect for pronation, my ITB kills me.

Go to a running store where they analyze your running stride, and work with them to find the shoe you need. I did this, got a pair of shoes, ran 3 miles, brought them back, and the immediately identified the problem, and sent me on my way with new shoes. Saved me time and pain, and now I can run.

For those of us who refuse to stop running due to ITB problems, have you ever heard of the foam roller. The foam roller is like a deep tissue massage that helps break up the scar tissue. Roll on it from the hip to the knee.

What Asics are you running in? You went from a super soft nuetral shoe too... Asics what? It definitely could be the shoes, but were you fit for them?

Just a few questions from a shoe geek.

Yes I was fit for them at my running store. The Asics are Gel Fortitudes:

I am about 6' 0" and 190 lbs.

I will take all the shoe geek advice I can get.

Drive up to Brookhaven and go to Big Peach and get them to fit you.

I second Rocket Man's idea of driving to Big Peach. They will put you on a treadmill and videotape your stride in different shoes to help you identify the one that works best for your running stride.

On another note, if the old shoes worked for you don't switch unless the company stops making the shoe. I played around for over a year trying different brands/models and never found one I liked as much as my old shoe. I went back to my old shoe but the latest model and have been much happier.

You started with a high cushion neutral shoe and went to an entry level neutral cushion shoe. Sounds like you need to stay with the higher cushion. If you liked the Asics fit you can try the Nimbus. Remember if your shoe isn't absorbing the shock you are.

One more thing, the Foam Roller will be your friend. If your gym doesn't have one ask one of the personal trainers, sometimes they hide them in their offices. If you can't find one break out with the rolling pin and roll it from the insertional point at the hip to the same at the knee. It will be sore, its breaking up scar tissue. Think of it as deep tissue massage. Very well you were already tight and switching shoes just aggravated it.

Happy Training!
