Not much warm up, just walked a few blocks

  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran a PR for races after the age of 40, but went out too fast. Couldn't gauge myself because there were no mile markers until mile 3. Slowed down considerably in the last half because of that and the fact that electroyte replacement drinks were not available with enough frequency. It was hot and humid for January, even for Key West.
What would you do differently?:

Slow down a bit and maybe take a salt/electrolyte tab with me next time.
Post race
Warm down:

A little stretching, water, and fruit and carbs

What limited your ability to perform faster:

mentioned above that I went out a bit too fast and the race ran out of electrolyte at many stations

Event comments:

This is usually a great race and usually rated the top, or one of the top destination half-marathons in the country. But they continue to increase the numbers of entrants without planning correctly for replenishments on the course. Plenty of water but not enough electrolyte replacement and no Gu

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

My thinking was that with three events, I could vary my training enough so it wouldn't grow stale prior to seeing positive results and finding the additional motivation I needed to continue training.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.
