Don't be defensive. Be PROUD. You have soooo much to be proud of. Ironman?! I can't even imagine - that deserves so much respect because you made the sacrifices to make your dream come true. In my eyes, you haven't given up anything. You are adjusting, you are moving on, you are realizing that there is lots out there that you are missing and you are doing what you need to do.

At the end of the day, you need to do what is right for you. Noone can take Ironman away from you, regardless of what your training schedule has changed to.

Be good and stay well.

I - like most people - am impressed that you completed an Ironman. That you did so with all that you had on your plate is doubly impressive. I think we all have to evaluate our goals from time to time and readjust as necessary. To not do so can lead to some pain down the road.

Keep with the sport of triathlon - you have many friends here.

I always have liked the saying:
"If it isn't fun, then why are you doing it? "

That's on the back of my Ben and Jerry's cycling jersey and if it isn't fun, you shouldn't do it. Go find something that inspires you, Ironman will always be there. Good luck!

Congrats on making a decision based on what YOU want.  It's important to do what makes YOU happy.  You're still going to be a triathlete and IM whether you do another IM or not.  Training for an IM is so demanding and requires a lot of sacrifice.  There's so many other things in life to experience- it's good that you recognize that.  Have fun and enjoy your new outlook!

Jess I'm really happy for you. Funny how some of the things that weigh us down the most are things we put on ourselves. You proved to everyone you can carry it, and now you're proving you can put it down and walk away from it in a dignified way and be happy about it. It was two months ago today that I was a freakin' basketcase insomniac looking at my first half like I was staring down the barrel of a shotgun, and you helped my get my head together. You knew just what to say. You "get it" in a way most people never do. I think that's why you can do this now and not be conflicted about it. You see things for what they are..  just one thing that makes you so d*mn cool... That and you make great ice towels!

Great thread, great insights...

keep enjoying triathlon at whatever distance you like, and know that Ironman isn't everything anymore.  You did it.  It's done.  You go on to other challenges.

Enjoy them all!

and a great lesson to be learned. Our lives have so many facets, it's a pity to shut some of them out at the expense of other endeavors.

Great thread.

hey Awesome.  I guess this means maybe I'll get more drunk phone calls.

Wait...you get drunk phone calls too?

No Fair!!! I didn't get a drunk phone call and I am in your area code!!!
Seriously, you have no idea how much inspiration your accomplishments are to those of us who are just beginning and especially in the context of your other commitments. I can remember seeing your pictures from IM when I first started lurking on this site and telling a friend of mine, "look, this girl from Tampa did an IRONMAN, rock on!!!". As a volunteer and spectator at both IMs and our local sprints, the cheers and admiration for the athletes don't change with the race distance. I am sure your love of the sport will not change with the distance either!
Hang in there and hope to see you flying by in a race someday!

you know what Jess, it was the right decision for you, because that decision made you more at peace with yourself.  You are still one of the BT Goddesses no question, and you are still an Ironman forever.

Hey girl - haven't talked to you in a LONG time!  Very cool of you to share what you've decided and why.  There's all kinds of stuff we HAVE to do every day for ourselves and others, so it only makes sense to choose fun stuff to do the rest of the time.

Now I look forward to seeing you light back up

Jessica, that takes so much strength.  I'm really proud for you and inspired by your decisions.  Thank you for sharing this with us.  It's something I think so many are afraid to talk about, but we really should address more.  You are a beautiful, strong woman!
