Subject: What MP3 player do you train with?

I just managed to kill off my Rio Sport (2+ years) and am in the market for a new MP3 player to run with.  Is there a good alternative to an Ipod on the market?

I'm not an Ipod snob. I just know that my daughter is always having trouble with her nano.

 Thanks bunches!

Used a nano in heavy training for nearly a year now, zero problems.

We killed off our Rio's last year Wife has the iPod Shuffle and I have the iPod Nano. We both love the iPods.

I would say the Shuffle is simpler, cheaper, and the perfect size to not be a distraction. My wife has been very happy with it. Our only con’s for the Shuffle are capcity/playtime and some issues with the cap that covers the USB port (I think it completely lost now).

The Nano is more complex and pricey. It is a little larger but not as bulk as a full iPod. So far it has held up well, with no issues. It has more capacity and play time than the Shuffle. I use the Nike Arm Band for both biking and running. It appears less bulk and is washable (I sweat a great deal, so washing is a real plus). My only Con with it may be more the arm band, but occasionally I want to change volume or skip a song and the arm band may not be aligned to the button wheel. Mostly, that is just a frustration.

Overall – much happier with the Shuffle and Nano then other devices we have had…. And I pumped up my run pace by a few seconds using the Nano!

I used to use a Creative MuVo TX fm for awhile, and honestly I liked it pretty well. DH used a RIO then I upgraded him to a Creative MuVo which he still uses. He upgraded me to a Nano for Christmas and I REALLY love it. We listen to audiobooks as well as music, and it works better with them than the MuVo. I have started to use the iTunes on the desktop a bit, too, which I wouldn't have if I didn't get the Nano.

I sweat a ton, and use an armband. We swapped out headphones, too, for some buds that fit my ears better. I like that it is so light an portable, yet holds a TON of stuff. And I have an attachment for the car so no more CD changing, etc. there. Not to mention I can now get podcasts like the BT podcast! I'm hoping to try out that Nike pod thing on a regular shoe soon, which is another bonus.

I've never had a single problem with my Nano, and I am not kind or gentle with my gear.

Sister got an iPod, but then you have the skipping thing because it's a moveable disk.

Check out the creative products. They have a very nice line of products and they're much better priced than the Apple products. Go to www.creative.com. I have a Zen Jukebox myself. It's a little heavy but it holds 40GB or 16,000 songs. I only have 2,500 songs on it and I've had it for over a year... It holds up well except the case. The push button broke.

Wife had a shuffle but it died a few days ago. I think it got shocked on the treadmill. I have a nano and i love it. I don't train with it a lot, prefer quiet, but I have some and have not had any problems. I probably would have never bought one myself buy my mother in law got it for me for Christmas. Good luck in your search!

Creative MuVo TX

I have this as well.  I like the size and the belt clip works great.  I prefer that to an armband personally.  512 mb vs. "I don't know how many" GB an IPOD holds, but I only use it for training.  Certainly gets me through 2+hour runs.  <$50 at Amazon.com.

Small, no USB cord (case comes open and it plugs directly into the USB port of the PC) and works well.

Shuffle when I run outdoor. Ipod Mini when I work out at a gym. The Nano just seems too fragile and scratches easily.

Check out the SanDisk e270. SanDisk just put out it's new 8gb flash hard drive MP3 player and thus it's dropping the price of its smaller ones. The 270 is a 6gb flash hard drive MP3 player and you can get it at amazon.com for $179 right now (after rebate). Can't beat that price for the huge size of the hard drive and the reviews all around have been great. (I'm toying with getting one myself - my old MP3 player still works, though, so I don't have much of an excuse right now to buy a new one).

Gen 3 iPod. It's like three years old now, so it looks like I'm packing around a brick in my hand on the run when you compare it to a nano or a shuffle.

I want a nano for my next one.

I've had an iRiver mp3 player for a year and a half with zero problems so far.  Only 256 mb, but I can get enough songs on it to keep it interesting on a long run.

Take it to an Apple store and see if they will replace it.
They sold the shuffle "sport band" and later realized that as soon as sweat hits the contacts, the thing dies.
I am on my 4th shuffle and have NEVER paid for any repairs. I actually have 3 of them now because so many friends have had problems with them and upgraded to the nanos they keep giving them to me! Of my 3 shuffles, 2 are having "issues", one never charges, the other just stops playing randomly, then suddenly starts again. They are garbage, I would go for the nano or some other brand.

I have a rio carbon - 3 Gig.  I did manage to break the volume wheel but I always have it the same setting - ear drum busting!  I use an armband for road bike/run.  For mountain biking I carved a spot out of my helmet to keep it save.  I usually fall a few times and no spot but there is safe.

I have an iPod for my home/car, but don't use it to work out (too pricey to break, get rained on, etc).  I didn't want to have to keep screwing around with multiple programs to manage playlists and all that jazz (no pun intended), so I replaced my Rio Cali with a 1GB Shuffle.  Holds plenty, much lighter than my Rio, flash memory so no worries about bouncing around a disk in a nano, blah blah blah.  No complaints yet...

I wish I could train with one, but to simulate races I don't...most races at least around here don't allow mp3 players.

Dont' like to train with tunes, but use my nano when entertaining at home and on the boat.  I'm not very easy on my equipment and this nano has held up well.

Only complaint - ear buds won't stay in my right ear so I use different headphones.

After I bought the boat I had the stereo upgraded.  The head unit has an aux. jack on the face as do a lot of models.  Simply bougth a 6' cable at Radio Shack and away we went.  I typically use the nano for short rides only.  When we stay on the boat for the weekend I use my laptop hooked up the same way.

Sorry about the highjack.

I use my iAudio x5 for lack of a better product to use.  I love the player for everything but working out, but since it is HDD based, it is heavy and not so good for exercise.  I take it on bike workouts, I can just stash it in my backpack, but for running it's out.

Make sure if you get a new mp3 player and are planning to use it for exercise, that its memory is FLASH-based.  An HDD player will not be nearly as nice for exercise.  Flash players are not only more reliable in shock conditions such as running, but are almost always lighter and smaller.  The tradeoff of course is smaller storage capacity.

Though I'm loathe to suggest purchasing a product from the company that has a completely ridiculous market share, there is something to be said for being able to find accessories for iPods over other brands.  For my iAudio, there are really no options.  You can buy iPod accessories at gas stations.  For exercise, being able to find a nice armband or something for your player will probably be beneficial.

If you are looking for an alternative to iPod, I recommend the Cowon U3 or T2.  I don't actually own either of these products, but I own a Cowon player and I am very happy with it.  It has all the features of an iPod, without the flashy brandname/advertising, for probably 66% of the cost.  Just realize that by purchasing a player from a manufacturer that does not have 80%+ market share, you are going to limit your options for accessories.

That said, I believe Cowon does sell their own line of accessories, which probably includes an armband for use with their flash products.  Also, you will probably get more features for your $$ than with an iPod...

 Food for thought..

I use my iPod Shuffle.  Works great.  My husband tried using a 3rd generation 20GB hard drive while running, but it fell off the treadmill and the hard drive locked up.  No problems with the shuffle.  Other family members have used Nanos with no problems.
