Subject: New dog... a potential running partner?
9 weeks old, 4 lbs, 2 ozs. I need a running companion that can seriously pace 7:30 to 8:00, but I guess I'll be happy with a 10:00... probably more realistic, if any. It's a Rat Terrier. I wanted a greyhound, but I suppose this is better for my 8 year old son. I am talking about running with the lil gal when she is big enough. I also have a pit bull, but he tires out so quick now; he's 13 years old.

CUTE!

How big do they get? 20-30lbs? I don't think a smaller dog would be able to run long distances.

Rat Terriers?  No more than 10 lb!  She's sooooo cute!  And congrats for the Pit!  I had one when I was a kid ... awesome dog!

she's cute!  I'd say she shoudl be good for a few miles once she's old enough.  Dog's are biologicaly sprinters, especially little ones.  Doesn't mean they can't run long, just takes more work to get them there.

Once she's bigger, look into running agility with her.  It's a TON of fun.

You've obviously never run with my dog (German Shorthaired Pointer... any kind of athlete he wants to be).

I'd take it easy on this little guy with the running. Wait till he's almost a year old and he might be good for shorter recovery runs. You should have gotten the greyhound. I love those dogs. They've got the best temperaments and contrary to popular belief, can be trained into running mid  distances.

Thanks a lot, guys. She already knows her name (Shiela) and follow me all around the house! I took her walking for a block last night. I think it may be a little too quick for her, but I want to get her used to it. (Base building! ) I heard she should get no more than 15 lbs. (But isn't that what they all tell you?)
