You don't need a particular trainer.  You need a power meter, HR monitor, and a speed/cadence sensor.

You don't even need a power meter:

What do I need for Zwift?

Ok.  That makes sense that they'd provide an option for virtual power with trainers that provide a relatively consistent power curve the way that Trainer Road does.

Awesome!

Many thanks for educating me on this one, as I'd assumed one needed a smart trainer.  I'll need to get a dongle, but that's it (I have a PM).

Sweet!

I think the biggest hurdle for most people is having a PC or laptop with a good enough graphics card.  99.9% of the time I'm on my ipad at home.  Laptop collects dust and no desire to upgrade it.

Hey Zwift guys, I have been working with Cycleops VirtualTraining and though I'm properly calibrated, my speed, i.e. times, in online route are avg. 2 minutes slower than my actual work in my Joule. How is it working out for you all in Zwift, when you're working to "stay with the pack" or "keep up" where proper pacing/speed is even more relevant?

I stopped using a speed sensor becuase it was never even close to relevant on the trainer and outside I have GPS. Outside (on a flat stretch, with no wind) I'm moving about 22 mph at 200 watts, but on the trainer, 200 watts is more like 17-18 mph. Which would be closer to going up a hill or having a very strong head wind. So do these programs use your watts or your speed to move you relative to other riders?

Your speed is measured from your wattage (either from a pm or estimated "zpower") and w/kg.

I wish, that didn't exactly correspond all too well in VirtualTraining either. I enjoy the scenery to avoid boredom, the joule and poweragent software are great, so I gauge the workload there. But leaderboards and "keeping up" has to be all skewed, cmon. You zwift guys are telling me when in a group ride, it calibrates well enough that the pack can work individually with accuracy to stay together? If so, maybe I switch over in a month.

In VT, if I am doing a timetrial route and a checkpoint comes up with leader's time etc. If I pump up to 125%ftp+ for 1-2 minutes whatever to "beat that point" , my VT speed ticks up a whopping 1/2-1 mile per hour. Yeah, tell that to my legs

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking.

Are you asking if it is accurate enough to keep a group together? If so, I'd direct you to the WSR (weekend social ride) rides, where they often have 50-100 people in a group that stay together. The drafting is not the same as real life, but if you stay around the same w/kg as the group... yes you'll stay together.

My back wheel needs to be trued up. It has a slight side-to-side wobble, and I feel at times like I'm going to lose control when I ride. Is this something that I should only trust to my LBS to do?
