Hi everyone. My first tri is tomorrow and there's scattered T-storms forecasted for overnight and for all day tomorrow, especially in the morning. What can I do to be prepared for the rain? Just put trashbags over my bike?

put a bag over your transition stuff and if it's been raining the day before, lay your stuff on a bag. Keep your dry clothes in your car! I woud go so far as to put everything in separate ziplock bags, but I'm a little kooky like that.

Make sure you have clear glasses or yellow lenses to protect your eyes.
Gloves to be able to hold on to wet handle bars.
Your bike gets wet when you come out of the water, so I really don't worry about it getting wet, but I see a lot of people put grocery bags on their seat and computers, they rip them off right before the race starts.
If it's going to be cool out maybe bring a vest or arm warmers to ride in.
A hat to run in.

*On the bike, be careful of the white fog line. Don't ride on it. The water makes it extra slippery and you could crash. Also water acts as a lubricant for glass. I did Timberman last year and saw more flats than I've ever seen due to the wet roads.

Be prepared (mentally) to get wet and just enjoy it.

What distance are you doing?

Good advice, but I'm wondering how do wet roads cause flats?

It's a long-ish sprint.... 1 k swim, 30 k ride, and a little over a 5 k. It just figures that all summer we've had near drought-like conditions, and the one day I have a race, it rains!!

Thanks for your help! I usually ride in regular glasses since I don't have contacts or bike sunglasses. Hopefully rain doesn't drip in them and make me blind. I'll keep all of your other tips in mind.

The water acts as a lubricant so the little glass shards can more easily cut your tires, where if it was dry you probably would roll over them. This is what I was told, anyway.

The most important thing is to be safe so you can race again tomorrow. Good Luck!

With all respect, that's ridiculous.

Hey Baltimore Bethany!

I am getting concerned they may call the race for overnight thunderstorms, I'm very nervous about riding my bike on the hills with all the rain on them. Good Luck!

I'd worry about the slickness of the road surface especially if it you have not had rain in a long time.......here in California the slick builds up for 6-7 months before we get rain again in November, and it is pretty incredible how slick the road gets when the rain hits....usually a rash of accidents.....every year they warn about it, and every year it happens again...add to that the fact that you are probably not used to riding in rain either....wouldn't worry about that bike getting wet, she can handle it ;-)

Don't worry about keeping your bike dry as you will be wet when you get on it anyway! The only thing I did for my rainy tri's this year is keep my dry clothes in a bag at the transition (2x shoes, socks).
Good luck and you will have a great time. None of the competitors will mind being in the wet but it's a bit more miserable for the spectators

Hi

I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but I have a question. I have an xterra race tomorrow and I was wondering what they usually do in the case of rain. Do they cancel the swim?
