Comments:

First mountain run. At the 10,200 foot turn around elevation I experienced no altitude issues. Felt this was a great preview of the trail for Pikes Peak Marathon in August.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder after the W's. I left lots of time on the trail there. Stop and take the rocks out of my shoes beofre descending. Had huge blister on right heel. Before it was all done, I lost the callous on more than half of my right foot and couldn't run for two weeks.
Post race
Warm down:

Hobbled down to the creek and soaked in the ice cold water for 10 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of knowledge on the trail and mountain running in general.

Event comments:

This was a preview of the Pikes Peak run in August. After the race we took the COG railway up to Barr Camp and ran to the summit of Pikes Peak on Tuesday. I had serious altitude issues that would come back to haunt me in the Pikes Peak Marathon.

Course: Started at Hydro Street Manitou Spring Colorado. First 1/4 mile on Ruxton Ave then hit the trail for the 13 switchbacks called the W's. The W"s are single track, steep and rocky. I passed when possible but otherwise hiked in the single file line. A little steep climbing after the W's then it traverses the saddle over to Pikes Peak. Runnable flat and even down sections before the last steep climb into Barr Camp. Total climb to Barr Camp ~4,000 over 6 miles = 12.6% grade. I'd never run the course and held back a little too much but boy was it fun to scream down the mountain.
