anybody using the garmin Fenix 2 for triathlons? What do you think. Read dcrainmakers review. I currently have the garmin 310xt but don't like not having a swim mode.

I love my Fenix 2. Moved from the Garmin 910XT because I use the Fenix as a day-to-day watch. The automatic sync is hit or miss for me, which is my only issue with the watch.

The Fenix 3 has just come out which means the Fenix 2 should come down in price. But I like some of the new features that the 2 doesn't have (like smart notifications and daily activity tracking).

For me personally, both of these watches are way too big to wear as an every day watch, so I won't get one to replace my Garmin 910xt. I use the 910xt for traithlon training and it's great and it has most of the same the swim tracking features (indoor and outdoor) that the Fenix watches have.

The price has come down. Grabbed one from Clevertraining.com for $239. Like the looks better than the 910xt. Wanted swim lap tracking that 310xt does not have. Couldn't resist the price.

Great deal. I love the lap tracking too. One piece of advice-- if you do open/touch turns, make sure you are wearing the watch on the hand that touches the wall. If you do that you will get almost perfect lap counting. The only time it counts an extra lap on me is if I have to stop in the lane for some reason.

I have the Fenix 2 and I love it. Great in the pool and haven't had a problem with it at all. I haven't done a tri with it yet but so far I doubt I would have any problems. I do agree with the person that talked about the wall touching in the pool with the lap count. Once I figured that out it was smooth sailing. Laps are perfect every time and it lets me not worry about counting in my head for my longer swims and think about other stuff.

So how much better is the screen to read in the sunlight than the 910xt?

The white on black can be tough to read at off angles, but I've never had an issue when looking straight on. The look is worth it to me.

Love the watch but had to send exchange it with garmin. I could never get the vibrate to work. Hopefully new one will be fine. Also, the alert tone could be a bit louder. Not that big a deal as long as vibrate works

I've had mine about 15 months now.  The first 6-9 were the usual Garmin "make their customers Beta testers" and I had to deal with very poor GPS tracking and weekly bug fixes.  Now that it's stable, it's an awesome watch.  Love the swimming tracking and the customizable activities and data pages.  I also wear it as an everyday watch but it doesn't really fit under dress shirt cuffs.

You can customize the data pages for each activity under Settings > Activities > Run > Data Pages.  You can then choose how many data pages, how many fields each one has, and what fields are in those pages.

Depending on how much extra you want to spend, I'd suggest getting the Fenix 3 over the Fenix 2. I had the 2 for about 11 months and then got the Fenix 3. Although on the surface they seem the same stuff, the 3 does everything better, faster, prettier. Screen is better and in color, bluetooth connectivity is light years better (as in I can use it without draining battery versus on the 2 it drains it super fast), GPS acquisition is significantly faster (like 2 seconds versus 30...not that much but still), the training modes and data page setup is much better and more customizable, etc. Its just a far superior product for only like $100 more. Using a car analogy, its like a Jetta versus an Audi- same parent company but one is clear nicer...

I agree if the price difference is only $100 then it's worth considering the fenix 3. I think now though the fenix 2 has been out for awhile now so if you wait for specials like the $239 deal I got or refurbished one the price difference is much larger than $100. For my needs, the feature difference between the 2 & 3 was not enough to justify spending far more on the fenix 3

Good points. Yeah, for me, it wasn't a big deal in the end because I returned my Fenix 2 and only had to pay, I think, $120 more for the Fenix 3. I don't think i would want to pay $250 more for it though!

Hello everybody, I just registered on this amazing forum.
I am just now getting into Triathlon.
I agree with Louis, and just bought a Fenix 3 bundle over the Fenix 2 since the price difference was of about 120€.
After quickly setting it up I used it yesterday for a short bike ride and it really seems a great tool for training....
As it is very similar to the Fenix 2 I wanted to ask a few questions to you guys that have benn using it for some time.

What do you think of it's accuracy regarding real time speed and total distance when using it for bike rides.
I had the impression that speed is not that precise, especially climbing and/or when you are in a wooded area for example.
Maybe next time I will use it together with my Polar with speed sensor to check it out....
Perhaps activating GLONASS might help?
If I want to see the steepness of the road, do I have to use "grade" or "glide ratio"?

Also I read in the manual about 3D distance and speed option, but I can't quite figure it out.
Is it worth activating this function?

Regarding swimming in an outdoor pool, I imagine you should use "pool swim", and in this case the gps would not be enabled to measure distance, correct?

Thanks to all!
