What would be the minimum number of weeks out from a full IM you would consider doing a half? The races I am looking at would mean a half IM seven weeks out.

I would think 5-6 weeks out would be the absolute shortest. 7 seems like a reasonable amount of time.

7 weeks is fine.

I personally would prefer something like 7 weeks.  1 week just basically off, or a few recovery workouts just for blood flow, 2 weeks of light training to still allow for some recovery but at the same time get back into the swing of things, then a small 3 week build (nothing crazy) with HIM focused workouts, and a 1 week taper.

Of course, scheduling doesn't always work out that way...but that's what I would hope for.

I encourage athletes to schedule their HIMs 7-8 weeks out IF they are going to do one (I don't always recommend it). That way you have time to recover and put in 1-2 more solid training blocks before the big day. When you do them too close to the event then you often don't have time to make adjustments or correct problems that might arise from the half.

OK, thanks for the input.  Think I will schedule it in then.

So I'm actually training for a half in mid July but my trainer has had me doing around the 1/2 distances already. 13m run, 60m bike, etc. I can't stop thinking about doing a full....do you think 7-8 weeks would be long enough to bridge to a full? Goal for 1/2 is 6 hours. Goal for full would be to finish probably 14-15ish.

I haven't talked to my trainer or wife about it yet but I've had it stuck in my mind for a few months now.

Possibly long enough although I don't think I would do this myself.  For me my main concern would be having to build up the run distance too quickly.  Have a look at a IM training program and see if the workouts at 8 weeks out are what you are equal to what you are doing around the time of your HIM.
