I havent done any races this year so far i was just planning on just doing the Half Ironman this year but was thinking should i really get a race under my belt before the 5th Sept.

and was thinking of doing a Standard Tri 1.5k swim, 40k cycle and 10k run 3 weeks out from the Ironman is this a good idea ? or should i just do a Sprint tri

I hope so, because I am doing the same thing! I have found that I recover fairly quickly from an Oly and really only need about 3 days to get back to normal. Plus I will not go at 100% effort which will help

Three weeks prior to your HIM should be your last big week of training.  If your set on racing that Oly I would take it easy the week leading up to the oly and race the oly at 100%.  Then make the week after your oly your last big week of training (last long swim, bike, and run) and taper the last two weeks.

I'm going to disagree with that.  If you're sacrificing a training weekend to race you might as well make it count.

If you are going to race the oly, than go all out. Personally I see zero point in not racing as hard as you can. Recovery from an oly distance race is quick. Depending on your training scheduled & race day you could pick up you training without missing any workouts. My schedule gives me one off day per week. Which to me means zero training. Well, unless you count playing whatever pool game that kids feel like playing that day. Anyway, if the oly is on Sat, then Sun is my off day & Mon picks right back up with the training schedule. I agree that the week after the race should be "peak" training, or whatever terminology your plan utilizes.

Either go with GMAN's suggestion or do the Sprint as a substitute workout. I might be asking the obvious, but is there no way you can do an Olympic 4, 5, or even 6 weeks ahead of your half?

Thanks 3 weeks out is the only date that suit me to getting in a race.

i could always do a Bike / Brick Session of 40k and 10k run at race pace 4 to 5 weeks out don't know would that be the same..

I think it is one of those things that is very individual and you need to know your body. I know a lot of people who could do this. Although this would not be a good idea for me as my legs take a long time to recover after racing. If it was me I would probably sign up for the aqua bike.

I did this last year with no problems. Well except there was an issue of a guy swimming into oncoming traffic and hit me head on.

I did the Oly for two reason: 1 I'd never raced that distance before and wanted to. 2. it was at the same location my HIM was and I wanted to test the roads.

It worked for me.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
