MTB'ers

Just would like to ask a few questions regarding MTB'ing as follows:

1.) What would be my estimated MTB bike time for a 100 miler if im 18 mph on roadbike.

2.) any training plans out there for a 100 miler MTB?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

It's impossible to answer your question. Mountain bike terrain is too variable. While fitness is important, skill is way more important in an MTB event than it is in a road race. And there is a tremendous skill difference between a novice MTB rider and an experienced rider

I entered a 40 mile (65 km MTB) race a few years back and it took me a little over 4 hours to finish. I have never been so completely shattered at the end of a race - nothing else even comes close. I have done a lot of mountain biking but mostly on fast flowy single track. The race was on mountainous, twisty, rocky, rooty, beautiful, hellish trails. The apparent ease with which some riders handled the technical terrain was very impressive. I wasn't one of those riders.

Are you an experienced MTB rider? If you already have great MTB skills you can concentrate on building endurance for a long race.

If you haven't done much MTB riding I would try to do as much riding as possible on terrain that is similar to the 100 mile event. Try to hook up with local MTB groups and learn from better riders. Ride your MTB. A lot.

Good luck.

MTB is not comparable at all to road cycling races...

It all depends on the terrain of the 100 mile course. MTB courses tend to have some crazy climbs and mixed terrain that make it much harder. also can have technical sections that require decent skill.

100 mile MTB race is no joke, I guarantee that.

I am doing the Wilderman in North Dakota next season. Reading those race reports is pretty intimidating. I have done a 24 hour mtn bike race (at the Canmore Nordic Centre) and I can say mountain biking is nothing like road riding. Mtn biking is a full body pounding.

Well I said that I was not going to do it this season, but I cracked. I broke down and bought a new bike. I went out and bought a shiny new Cannondale road bike.
