Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am, showered, ate and was out the door by 5:15. Drove the 1.5 hours to the race, registered, and up transition.
Event warmup:

Went for a short bike and short run to warm up, then got wetsuit on, and swam a few yards to warm up in the water and waited for race to start
Swim
  • 15m 14s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

The course was a counterclock wise swim, which for me is not that desireable since I breath on the right, plus my navigation skills suck. My wave had about 70 people in it and I positioned myself in the front middle, which ended up being a good spot. About half way to the turn around buoy, I looked up to sight and realized that I was about 50 yards to the right of the wave...NOT GOOD. So I worked my way back to the turn buoy, and was fine after that. I was able to draft off others which seemed kind of wierd, and almost like cheating since they don't let you draft on the bike, but I figured, why the hell not, since there is no rule against it. I found a few peoples feet and followed the bubbles!! This was the fastest that I have swam in open water (by 3 minutes), and I attribute 99% of that to my new best friend...my Orca!! One thing I did notice when I came out of the water was I did not feel tired, So I guess at the next race I will ahve to push myself a little harder

Comments:

Overall, nice course, a few hills that I did not expect, but the downhills were AWESOME, I checked my computer, and my top speed was 33.4mph...now that is flying!! Also, recorded my fastest bike split at 20.77mph!! Passed a few people, got passed by a few
What would you do differently?:

train on more hills
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Great T2, quicker than I thought I would be

Nothing

Comments:

Great run, 1st mile 7:45, 2nd 7:37, at this point I started to do the math on what it would take to finish under 1:40:00, which was 5 minutes faster than my goal pace of 1:45:00, 3rd 7:38, 4th 7:58, sprinted the last 1/4 or so and past one last guy...I thought I was going to die the last 100 yards, but I could hear him coming from behind me I thought " I'll be damned if he is passing me back"
What would you do differently?:

More bricks, train to run faster
Post race
Warm down:

yeah right

Great race, Ben!

It was nice to meet you before the swim. Sorry I didn't talk longer. I usually get a bit out-of-sorts right before the race.

With the clear water, it was fun to follow the bubbles. Unfortunately, I was behind way too many bubbles...need speed!

It was nice to meet you too.  I am the same way before any event...kind of get into a zone.  Hey, did the swim seem like it was mesured a little short to you?  It just seemed like there were a lot of REALLY fast times, including mine since I can't sight to save my life

Great race, you probably pasted me somewhere as I was in your same heat. I live in Brainerd so I know the bike course well and I totally agree a few of the road feel like cobblestone. Hope you make it next year to our neck of the woods.

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure the actual distance is a little over 17 miles, about 17.35 so your bike time is really slightly faster than the split given by pickleevents.
