Does anyone know if pubic swimming is allowed in the Canal?   Is there a designated 'beach' area?    I am doing the Welland race on Saturday but will be driving up on Friday and want to get an OWS in.

Yes, we swim in the canal all the time. There is a specific area for swimming, it is different then the race area but the conditions are the same. Let me see if I can find a link with a map.

Not sure why the link say it is close but this is the location.
You go down Thorold Rd till the end, you hit the canal. There is small parking lot there but if you turn left there is a gate (which should be open) that leads to a gravel road. Just a short way down there is a rowing building, parking lot and docks. There is a specific dock that is marked for swimming, it is the first one you see, with steps leading down to the water.

The swim lane is not well marked this year (there are a few bouys) but it goes towards the bridge and you stay to the left of the canal (right side on the way back). If you go under and just to the other side of the Woodlawn bridge ( the only one you will see) and back it is about 1km.

THANK YOU!    Appreciate this very much.    Looking forward to my swim!

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
