Overall Rank = 498/590
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 71/77
Pre-race routine:

Oh boy. If I had a crystal ball when registering I never would have, but glad I did. Between the sprained ankle that refuses to heal, weight gain, and no training to speak of I wasn't ready to "race" but figured it could be a training day with traffic control. Also wanted to see if I could relight my fun in s/b/r. A few weeks out I saw they offered an oly aqua bike and tried to switch. But since I had early bird pricing, they wanted $35 to not use the run course, so decided to hand in my chip after the bike and take the DNF. Called an audible the morning of and brought my ankle brace in case I felt like I could finish safely. I was one of the first there because I didn't do packet pickup the day before. One of the few changes since Challenge took over is the same day pickup for the oly. Love that option!
Event warmup:

Sqeezed my oversized self into a wetsuit with help and splashed around a little.
Swim
  • 38m 1s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Knowing where I'm at, stayed in the back and let everyone go. Just took it easy with a little breast stroke for resting/sighting. I was really happy for the cloud cover. I usually can't see the entire second leg of this lake with sun in my eyes but no issue today. I think I navigated fine, just swam very slowly

Bike

  • 23.10 km/hr
Comments:

I had a modest goal of 160 watts throughout but didn't make it. Got passed a lot but told myself I didn't care. Even though I wasn't pushing it, by 20 miles was ready to be done. Did not trust my handling enough to bomb the descents since I've hardly ridden outside and hadn't been on the tri bike in 9 months. Had two honey gels and water.

2013 - 1:24:45 17.7mph
2015 - 1:43:55 14.8mph
Transition 2
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

Took my time to put on ankle brace and deal with the mess my neighbor left. If I was actually racing I would have racked my bike right on top of his shit and let him deal with the chain grease issue on his own.

2013 - 0:54
2015 - 3:18
What would you do differently?:

Should have skipped the brace. More harm than good
Run
  • 1h 10m 4s
  • 10 kms
  • 07m 01s  min/km
Comments:

Did a lot of walking. The ankle wasn't as big a problem as back pain. So I ended up walking the downhills almost as much as the climbs. I was again very thankful for an overcast day!

2013 - 48:25/7:52 per
2015 - 1:10:04/11:18 per

What would you do differently?:

Not even going there
Post race
Warm down:

Had a burger and went to meet family at lake Compounce for rides and beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just fitness and health

Event comments:

Still love this race. Challenge didn't change much but they stopped handing out icey towels at the finish. I loved that cold thing and was looking forward to it. Plus I like to use them at the gym. A lot better than a medal, but a small thing. Very nice race and I think I'll sign up for Maine.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.
