Subject: RE: AC Challenge In for the full. I did it last year and liked it enough to try again (I was less than pleased with my time, but loved the race ).
Water temps can be all over the place. Last year at the Saturday practice swim the tide I guess was coming in and the temps were reported (and honestly felt ) only 70 degrees. Race morning the tide was headed the other way and that resulted in a 79 degree reading. Also that seemed to generate a wicked current out at the far end of the swim course where many of us recall the famous "treadmill buoy" where we all swam at it for 10 minutes and made no progress.
The bike course is much improves as well. Last year's 15 miles on the AC Expressway was like riding into a wind tunnel. Downright demoralizing. The two-loop course going up into the forest should at least mitigate the wind issue (doubt it will eliminate it entirely ).
As for the run? In my opinion that was the BEST part of the race. Running 26 miles on boardwalk after everything else was a treat. Your hips and knees don't take nearly the pounding they would on pavement or concrete. Also whether or not they were there to see a race, there are spectators all along the run course. You will never be lonely. Sure there were all kinds of crazy fools getting in the way, and lots of spectators were getting in on the action yelling at people to stop wandering around the course. At one point I was in zombie mode around mile 22 of the run and actually knocked some teenage kid over. He wasn't paying attention where he was going and I was pretty much unable to change course at that point in the day, and I slammed right into him. I am amazed he fell instead of me. I had spectating friends running up and grabbing the rickshaws pushing them out of the way. It was hilarious. |
