HITS Triathlon Series
52F / 11C
Precipitation
Total Time = 3h 02m
Overall Rank = 44/77
Age Group = F35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/7
Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep a wink. Got up early, packed everything up, and grabbed a bagel w/butter and medium coffee from Dunkin' Donuts. Only managed to get half of it down - so hard for me to eat first thing in the morning. The cold pouring rain definitely made setting up transition more awkward than usual.
Event warmup:

At least the water temperature was decent. Watched the sprint wave go off and did some swimming. Tried to get a feel for the chop, but the wind was down and there really wasn't any. Noted it was a shallow swim and there'd be a long run into and run out of the water. (At least for us non-dolphin divers.)
Swim
  • 40m 14s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ugh. Got a good enough start, but the wind (and chop) came up just as the gun went off and I panicked. The first time, I literally stood up to calm myself. The second time, I was near the end of the loop, tried to stand up again and couldn't, and freaked out a bit. Finally got my head together for the last 1km, but awful, awful swim. Also never had feet. Ugh.
What would you do differently?:

Tried preparing by warming up beforehand, but like I said, the wind came up JUST as the race started. Maybe swim in Mirror Lake on windy days more often?
Transition 1
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Already had goggles and cap off thanks to long run in shallow water.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. 1:14 T1? I mean, come on. I do pride myself on rocking my transitions.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 57s
  • 40 kms
  • 28.59 km/hr
Comments:

SECOND AG RIDE?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! That and the Bike PR....wow.

Anyway, the heavens just opened up. At least the wind wasn't too bad at this point. Had to take the turnarounds and corners very slow due to conditions.

Power dropped for the second 10K because a torrential downpour started and I was literally having trouble seeing where I was going. I even tried looking OVER my sunglasses (which were fogging up) and the rain was SO hard it hurt my eyes.

That 115 was pretty hard - better conditions could have hit 120 - doing some actual Oly training hit 125. LOL.

Ate 6 chews and drank one Aerodrink of Skratch. Just right.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. The places I slowed down I HAD to because of conditions. Still kept a 115 watts average and averaged well over 17 MPH in those conditions so happy with that.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

1:06 is a slow T2 for me, but between them and my feet being soaked AND literally being unable to feel my feet because of the cold, couldn't get my damn shoes on. This is the easiest place to see where I didn't get that 1 second to come in with a 3:01 time.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I COULD do. Usually I powder my shoes to help get them on quickly, but that would have just made a nasty mess. Just a matter of the conditions.
Run
  • 55m 28s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 33s  min/km
Comments:

On the way out, kept it at 160 as planned. Felt very easy. HR went over a few times but that was on hills and I wanted to practice not walking even when my legs wanted me to.

Had lots of gas at the turnaround, so made it a goal to keep HR over 170 and bust it home. Best comment I got as I passed someone: "You got some wheels on you!" How much faster did I go? About 29 minutes to the turnaround, about 25:30 back.

Tried so hard to come in under 55, but couldn't quite make it happen.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Yeah, slow, but that was part of the race plan.
Post race
Warm down:

Warm down? It's called "not collapsing." LOL.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim: lack of mass start/OWS practice

Bike: Conditions, lack of Oly-specific training. (Way happy with my ride, kinda hard to answer this one! LOL!)

T2: Definitely the conditions. Stupid running shoes. LOL.

Run: Keeping it at marathon HR for the first half, umm...lack of general run volume or Oly-specific training, I guess? (Once again stretching here.)
