Pre-race routine:

Got up around five, ate some cheerios, banana and coffee. I was feeling nervous and didn't have much of an appetite. Rechecked packing and woke up Nick, age 9, around 5:40. He's my race buddy and BTer groupie. We packed up the car and left @ 6.

Drove for an hour, sipping Accelerade, got to parking lot, only to be waved down the road. I was part of a 4-car caravan that travelled another 5 miles down the road looking for a race official to tell us where to park. We all pulled over and decided to drive back to parking lot to find out WTF we're supposed to park. It's about 7:20 now. We finally get directions to the auxilliary parking area. Park. It's now 7:30 and I gotta pee wicked bad. Also need to pick up packet, get marked, get number on bike, set up transition, get Nick situated with the race volunteers... I manage to accomplish all that while getting kicked out of the transition area (race couldn't start until transition area was clear)
Event warmup:

See above... Ran into Bters, Joanne, Amanda, Glenn and Nikki, who was volunteering. Thank you Nikki for helping me calm down before my swim "just swim from bouy to bouy."

I was in the 5th wave and had a few minutes to get on wetsuit. Ran into soe ladies from my tri team. It was the first Oly for a number of us
Swim
  • 34m 13s
  • 1408 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim is my weak link. I was fully prepared to spend closer to 40 minutes in the water, so I'll take the 34 minutes. I actually felt comfortable and swam at my own pace...
What would you do differently?:

nada --- need to work on this in the off season
Transition 1
  • 03m 59s
Comments:

yikes! Had to climb up steep hill immediately out of the water. I was really dizzy so I walked a bit at first to avoid falling.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 43s
  • 25.2 miles
  • 18.06 mile/hr
Comments:

I liked the bike course. As this was my first oly, my mantra on the bike was "save some for the run." On sprints I tend to go all out and I knew I couldn't do that on this race. I was passed by a steady stream of 30-year old men on the cool bikes, but I felt good about my pace. Drank a full bottle of accelerade before I started in with the water.

Oh, I also got busted for drafting....It happened around mile 20 when I thougt I should ease up on my pace, so I thought I'd hang with the woman in front of me. We approach a hill. Oops, now she's going too slow. There was a lot of traffic around so I wasn't comfortable passing. I guess I was creeping into the draft zone...I heard a motorcycle behind and lo and behold! A race official with a notepad riding parallel with me. S%&t! I slow down. Offical lady still looking at me. Writes something down and then speeds off. WTF! Why pick on me, lowly BOPer instead of those packs of guys passing me in formation?? Oh well... life's not fair. I pass woman in front of me.

What would you do differently?:

Not stay so close behind somebody? Otherwise I felt good on the bike. I pushed hard but controlled the urge to go all out..
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

First few steps off the bike were shakey... but settled into a trot. My bike was racked at the far end of the transition area. Threw on running shoes (luv my Yanks!) Eat a Gu and took off. My son, Nick, was with a group of kids handing out water and oranges out of T2. It was great to see him cheering everyone on.
Run
  • 58m 30s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Settled into a pace and "embraced the run". Was passed by more guys, only a few women passed me. I passed a few... Drink stops at every mile. Miles 2-5 I opted for gatorade. The run went by quicker than I thought. At no point did I say to myself "is it over yet."
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Ran into a bunch of Bters, Max, May, Joanne, Ellen, Joe, Kathy G and others were all there cheering people on. Stretched a bit. Watched Laura, Sue, Patty, DK and Glen come in.
Hung out and ate, drank, and made merry.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing. It was my first OLy and I was happy that I came in aroun 3 hours. The weather was perfect for a race. It was cool and overcast. I'm pleased that I reached my goal and look forward to more Olys next year!

Event comments:

There were a couple of dozen Bters from Mass and CT there, plus family members and SOs. It's so fun to see others and make new friends. It makes this sport much more than a hobby.

Joanne...nice race! Congrats on doing awesome on your first Oly!

Those packers were annoying...and I saw a race official shortly after the 10 of them passed me crossing over the middle line ..but gave out no penalties...strange.

Holding back on the bike wow you were fast and then look at your run pace.

Glad you were able to park and get situated quickly...frustrating when you are there in time, but can't park.

You rocked it!

Great race, Joanne.  Sorry about that penalty.  It's more like a "technical error".

What a hectic morning you had.  Glad you and Nick enjoyed the post-race get-together.  He cheered for me at run start.

Welcome to the "penalty club" because I got one at Hyannis!  It was good seeing you there again, and Nick too.  Gonna have to get him into a kids event sometime!

Great race!  Awesome time especially for your first oly.  Sorry to hear you got busted for drafting.  They certainly could've handed out penalties to lots of folks for drafting, blocking.  Pretty jammed up ride in places.   I freak if I'm not at a race 1 1/2 h early.  Great job settling yourself.  Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you.

Hi Joanne,

It was nice meeting you.  Congrats on your first oly!  You had a great bike and run. I wish I could run like that!    I still can't believe you got a drafting penalty....just bad luck I guess.    I think your son was volunteering with my daughter and sister!

Nice to see you again Joanne!  I can't believe you got a penalty  LOL  It does make me laugh to think about how hard they scrutinize the BOP'ers (not that you were BOP mind you) after seeing packs of FOPs go screaming by.  But anyhow....

you had a great race and I have to admit I'm more than a little excited about Nick getting into tris too

Great job and congrats on your first OLY!!  Shocking that they nabbed you for drafting after not getting the pack...  Maybe there were too many numbers to write down for the official in the group   Nice job despite the penalty though!!
