Subject: Timing chip
Many times at the end of a race I am just too exhausted to come to complete stop and let them cut the timing chip off. I need to keep walking and get my legs back under me. My actions (non-actions) have caused much of an uproar in the local Tri community. Club members accuse me of not following the rules; one member says I should be DQed. Others say I give the club a bad name. All of this because I do not immediately stop to allow the timing chip to be cut off.

I do not say a word I just hold up my hand and keep walking till I feel ok. Then I bring the chip back to the table. I have completed over 30 events and have never kept a chip. Once I became very sick before the swim and had to go to a local hospital, that chip I mailed back to the event company.

My question is:
Should my not stopping be an issue at all??

I have a hard time believing this is the whole story.

There is nothing against the rules about walking around for a few steps before taking the timing chip off. If your friends are really bent out of shape over this, then yes they need to get a life. But methinks something else might be going on.

What does "Then I bring the chip back to the table" mean?  You remove it yourself while you are walking around for a while and then hand it to them? Or you catch your breath for a few seconds and then allow them to remove it like they originally wanted to?

If it's the second I have done that myself more and don't see how anyone could have an issue with it.  If it's the first then I can possibly see how some might complain about that.

I am sympathetic from the standpoint that coming to a complete stop while getting my chip removed is one of the most uncomfortable parts of the race for me.

At my race this past Saturday there were only two chip pullers at the finish line.  I felt a calf cramp coming on and was afraid to stop so walked around in circles for maybe 10-20 seconds bit waiting for one of the volunteers to get free to pull my chip.

That being said, the integrity of the timing & scoring is dependent on having the timing chips properly controlled and accounted for.  If a significant amount of time elapses before you turn your chip in, then that might be why you have been given some grief.

It's also somewhat rude and inconsiderate to the timing folks (often volunteers) who have to sort and account for all the chips at the end of a race.

If it's that big of an issue, then I would suggest purchasing your own chip so turning it back in is no longer an issue.

If you can't come to a stop for 3 seconds after a race so they can remove the chip, you didn't race hard enough!
