Fernandina Beach, Florida

DRC Sports
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 29m 26s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 6/12
Pre-race routine:

Not difficult to get up at 4:00AM since we were still on a different time zone from our trip. Had breakfast at home w/ plenty of time to digest it before race time of 7:39. Had some coffee on the way to the race site.
Event warmup:

Just a little jog. Did not want to do much since my L knee has been swollen. Did a good swim w/u though before race started. Some active stretching too.
Swim
  • 08m 41s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt so good. I was surprised. Didn't get caught in any tangles of arms, legs or elbows, even at the buoys. Only got pushed under once.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was happy.
Transition 1
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

I'm always good at transitions. It was the fastest one for my age group.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 49m 11s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 19.27 mile/hr
Comments:

The whole ride felt better than expected, since we had been out of town and just gotten back 2 days earlier. The way out was much easier than the last 4 miles or so.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, but overall I was happy with it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Didn't feel the need to push myself as hard as I used to. Still 4th fastest T2 in my age group.
What would you do differently?:

Go a little faster if I thought I was going to be more competitive in the race.
Run
  • 29m 12s
  • 3.01 miles
  • 09m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

I was THRILLED! Only had to walk for short bits of time 3x for the whole thing. Still averaged <10 min/mile even with the breaks. Definitely didn't expect that.
What would you do differently?:

Train a little more as my joints allow to maybe be able to jog the whole thing next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Casual swim in the ocean. Always makes me feel better.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Old age, falling apart, not really as competitive as I used to be, etc. I'm not worried about it.

Event comments:

This was the first time this race series has started on time. The RD made quite a few announcements ahead of time to the effect that the event WILL start on time and he kept his word. Refreshing change!

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.
