Cinco Ranch Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 59s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Desperadoes
Age Group Rank = 15/55
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:30. Bonnie and I took our time getting water, and finalizing the bags. I drank a water bottle and ate a bagel with peanut butter.
Event warmup:

We live close to the site, so we rode our bikes th 2 miles to the race site. I swam for about 10 mins. No run warm up (poor decision).
Swim
  • 11m 57s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

About 100 yards from the start, I got kicked HARD in the face. the persons foot then went up my face and pulled my goggles off. I wear contacts, so I had to stop, pull the goggles back on and go again, I never got back into a smooth stroke. I was able to breathe bi-laterally the whole time though. I did not feel out of breath getting out.
What would you do differently?:

Not much other than not eat anyones feet.
Transition 1
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

My rack was the last rack, so I had a long way to go. We had a narrow space to get through to get to our rack, only enough space for ONE person. There were two guys that were walking to their racks, so I was stuck behind them. To make it worse, not one, but two jackasses put bikes in the walk way, I had to step over the bikes and the stuff. When I saw Bonnie was already in T1 (we were in the same wave), I knew just how bad my swim was. I used her as my rabbit to get out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

My actual T1 was pretty quick, but the long way from the swim out to the bike start took almost 2 mins. If I had signed up as an AG'r my rack would have been near the front. I made this same mistake last year.
Bike
  • 32m 41s
  • 12 miles
  • 22.03 mile/hr
Comments:

This route was within 2 blocks of my house and is part of my regular Saturday morning ride route. I had home field advantage. I was able to keep a good strong pace. My highest speed was 27 mph.
What would you do differently?:

I will never, ever have another Cliff Gel Mocha (aka poop) flavor again! Not only did it taste disgusting, but the poop spilled all over my hand too....YUK!!!!
Transition 2
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Long run to my rack. I was quick to change and go, but then had the long run out of transition too.
What would you do differently?:

See T1.
Run
  • 29m 1s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I just could not find it in me to get to that point where the suffering starts. I just did not feel like going any faster. I think it was self pitty for having such a crappy swim.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

I got 2 waters, one to drink, the other for my head. I went to the finish line to wait for Bonnie.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A crappy swim, the lots of negative thoughts for the rest of the race.

Event comments:

I started this race with the plan to place in my AG. I had my garmin on and had the pace alerts set for what I judged was a winning pace. After the kick during the swim, I just never mentally recovered.
This was just not my day.
This was my last sprint this season and I really wanted to end it with a bang, I don't even feel like it popped.
Oh well, on to Ironstar training.

Congratulations on a GOOD RACE Joe!!!  You "smoked" it on the bike...2nd place!  Your swim pace was pretty good too even with the mishaps.  And your run was pretty sweet as well.  You did very well!

I can't wait to see you at IronStar!!!!  You can DO IT!!!!!!!!

Great race Joe! Even with getting kicked in the face you still had a great race! Good luck training for Ironstar. Kylie and I might come up there and volunteer just to be a part of it!

Good job hanging in there. Every race has own set of challenges, we BTers just find a way to overcome them.

I am with you on the Mocha gels; taste like poop. I have pretty much given up on liquid gels anyway. Shot Bloks are the way to go. Very easy to grab, and no fumbling with packages, especially at the high speeds we ride at.

See you in Oct.

It's all relative, Joe. From my perspective, you had a smokin' fast bike and a solid run. GREAT job and LOVE the pre-race pic!

Thanks all. Even though I judge my race to not have been very good, it could have been much worse. Thanks for the kind words.
