Does it though?  If you are whippin' the horse enough when you do train, you might be begging for a rest day.

I was gonna say the same thing.  I'll tiptoe through this minefield and mean no offense...but...I think training with duration and intensity to improve will leave you wanting for that rest day.   If you don't want rest it's time to pick up your duration and/or intensity.

I used to hate rest days too, until I met some peeps on here that showed me what real workouts are all about.

So what your saying is that if I trained with you and JZAT, I'd be begging for rest days?

I guess for me I know there are days where I physically need to take a rest and (for the most part) I do take them. However, I almost always miss the activity that day.

Yes, that's what I'm saying    I know what you mean about missed activity.  Work harder and you won't miss it...

If he is, it must be some left over sappy from his anniversary last week   We have a good time out there jmwebs and are just a stone's throw away from ya.  I wouldnt say we beg for the rest days (well, I did for the last one) but have an understanding that they help ya come back stronger for another beating the next time around.

...although saying you 'hate' rest days DOES make you sound more hardcore... :

Does it though? If you are whippin' the horse enough when you do train, you might be begging for a rest day. It might work on those outside the tri world that are on perpetual rest days, but seems like someone begging to be injured to someone with even my pea brain of tri knowledge.

I should have used the sarcasm font. I didn't want to ruffle any feathers and say what I thought originally...

Due to time constraints from work and family, I can only do one workout per day so I tend to feel like a rest day is a missed workout. I think I would be more religious about my rest day/s if I was getting in two-a-days. I'm sure if I ever start training for a long tri and/or ever get past the drill workout at my Masters swim, I'll be eagerly waiting for my rest day each week.

love my rest days. i tend to take saturday as a rest day so am bust sleeping, socialising and volunteering at a local gay youth club. never do any activities though. my body likes my rest days and sunday is usually a double session (bike then swim later) so its nice to start the training week refreshed.

I like my rest day. It gives me time to mow the grass and walk the dog.

difficult for me too. I think triathlon's have a certain attraction for those who have OCD tendencies. It makes it hard to turn off the must-workout mentality and not feel guilt about not working out. I rationalize it to myself that if I schedule a workout every day, then I don't feel bad if I have to skip one at any time since it becomes a rest day. Since I'm not as disciplined about my rest days as I should be, i probably am more tired on average than I need to be. I think I just need to reprogram my brain to think of a rest day as a specific type of workout with it's very specific purpose in my overall training/performance goals.

I've always thought that I was boarderline OCD, even before doing tri's. It does make sense.

I used to struggle with rest days, now I enjoy them. The way we get better/stronger/faster it to overload our bodies, then allow them to recover and be stronger...to do that you need rest!

This past winter I actually had two rest days a week and still did 11 workouts a week  (Sundays were bike/run bricks and an evening swim) and it was great.

The other I see over and over most triathletes don't take a rest/recovery week. I do and struggled more with these then rest days....normally have 3 build weeks and then one rest/recovery week but the rest/recovery weeks can be more frequent depending on what is going on in my training and health wise. My rest/recovery weeks are very easy all aerobic and maybe 4 hours of training at most when regular weeks are 8-12 depending on the season.

Want to get faster? Rest weekly and have a rest/recovery week every 4th week minimum.

I'm in agreement with everyone. I have a hard time taking them but I know they are definately needed. My biggest problem is I'm still eating like a horse on my rest day.....

I have the same issues, and am dealing with a cervical injury, so I have a few extra rest days thrown in for medical reasons. I've found that eating a couple of bananas or other fruit takes care of this for me on those days (today I've had 4 or 5 bananas). They are about 100 calories apiece, so you can eat a couple or three of them at a time to fill you up, and not have extra empty garbabe calories. It would take 5.5 bananas to equal the calories of a big mac (560 calories - without fries or the shake), which would fill you up more? Bananas may not be the answer for you, but I am sure there is a fruit out there to substitute and fill your gut up.
