Subject: Triathlon Tomorrow. Just found a slit in my tire. Do I...

Just leaving for bike drop off when I noticed I small slit in the front of my front tire. Small but big enough that the tube was slightly bulging out of it. Pumped up my tire and its bulging out a little more.

So since I have to drop off my bike very soon I have 2 choices:

1. Put a patch on the inside of the slit tire and then use it for the race tomorrow (Conti Grand Prix 4000s)

2. Put on my old tires that came with my bike (Vittoria Rubino Pro Slick).

So basically use better, but more worn and patched, tires or use less worn but worse tires.

Thoughts?

Thanks. Ya I just finished changing the front, about to do the rear. It just sucks because those were my racing tires and the ones I've been training with, so I really didn't want to change them right before a race. But yes you are right changing them is the best and safest choice.

I would leave the good GP4000s on the bike. Just change out the one with the slit.

Really? I thought it would be better to ride on a matching set than to use mismatched tires, but I guess that doesn't really matter does it?

Haha well that's important too, but for one race I guess I can let it go.

Definitely change it out!!

This is a good reason to have a spare gp4000s laying around!

Thankfully I have a set on each bike, so I can swap one over!

Anytime a tube is exposed there is no question in my mind to replace.  It seems like I get small slits frequently but if they are superficial I don't worry too much about it.

Hope your race went well; I have used pro slicks in the past and they are a pretty good tire. Not as good as the conti on rolling resistance but you probably did not feel much of a difference.

For future reference, if you can see the tube you need to change the tire out. That's just asking for trouble.

Yes it did. Thanks. I improved in every event (S, B, R & Transitions too) based on time and based the comparison in my Age Group, my Gender and Overall than last time I ran this race. So I'd call it a win. I'm just very glad I found that slit, or my race could have had a very different result.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
