Iron Man Series
22C / 72F
Sunny
Total Time = 22m 41s
Overall Rank = 98/205
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/12
Event warmup:

Dip in the water with a short swim.
Swim
  • 22m 41s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

Cold! Could not breathe, so asked for 'help' twice, to hold on to the kayak. First time, after 50m. Second time, after 150m, inhaled some water and felt like I was about to pass out. Reverted to the back stroke for a bit then to front crawl, then again to back stroke. After buoy #3 out of 5 finally could do the front crawl as I did not feel my face anymore and was happy to see the finish in sight. Was breathing every 2nd stroke.
What would you do differently?:

Hard to say. "Do not swim" in the cold water sounds like the best option. I do not handle cold water well. I did wear a neoprene hat, gloves, booties and ear plugs. Perhaps, keep my face in that cold water for longer before the start.
Transition 1
  • 06m 19s
Comments:

Frozen. Had troubles with the zipper on a jacket. Could not think straight. Started to shiver badly. I am glad I did not pass out.
Bike
  • 52m 28s
  • 25 kms
  • 28.59 km/hr
Comments:

Took about 5km to get into it.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster on the downs.
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Hard to run in bike shoes after the dismount. One day I will learn how to leave my bike shoes in the clips and will run barefooted.
Run
  • 28m 21s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 40s  min/km
Comments:

Left foot neuroma was sore. Overall I was low on energy out after the swim. Cold feet too.
Post race
Warm down:

Yay! Finally, my feet are warm.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cold water.

Event comments:

Happy to be done. Disappointed in reacting so poorly to the cold water. Thought of quiting after the first 100m.

Great job on finishing despite a tough swim. Looks like a beautiful place for a race!

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
