Subject: An Unscientific Test... your 70.3 vs. MILE time

I ran an all out mile as part of a team challenge a couple weeks ago... after finally catching my breath I had a random thought, simply that it would be interesting to poll triathletes to see which is faster: their typical Ironman 70.3 time OR the mile time they’re capable of today.

Obviously we’re talking hours & minutes for the 70.3 vs. minutes & seconds for the mile, but I’d argue that whichever is faster is a pretty solid indicator of whether your strength is in short-course or long-course racing.

Let’s take everyone who goes 6:30 for an Ironman 70.3. My guess would be a good chunk of that crowd could run a 6:30 mile or faster, but a perhaps equal or greater % could not.

So if you’ve done both (or have an idea of what kind of mile you can run), where do you stack up? Which is faster, your 70.3 time or mile time?

I've paraphrased a bit... out of respect for the forum I won't post links. You can check out the full story on our site if interested in the challenge.

I would definitely not be able to run my best 70.3 time.  5:30 and some change.

I doubt I could come anywhere remotely close to a 4:49 mile.

I couldn't touch my 70.3 time for a mile.  Current 70.3 PR is 5:35 and expect I could go sub-5:20.  I doubt my fastest mile would be much under 7:00.  I don't think I have any fast twitch muscles in my body!

Best 70.3 was 4:54 and I undertrained. I can barely run faster than a 6 minute mile (a few seconds), so nope.

I found it really interesting. Does anyone have an explanation?
I have not done 70.3 (yet), but my tint little Sprint races follow the same pattern: my Sprint is faster than my single mile, or "regular" 5K.

At 50 I'm more likely to pop a hammy or calf attempting a mile than getting close to my best HIM time (6:05).  I don't see me attempting this anytime soon!

Err...wouldn't 70.3 be indicative not only of endurance but also swim and (mostly) bike fitness? FWIW 70.3 time 5:32. No idea about mile but at this age it sure isn't 5:32. Maybe on a good day I could crack 6 minutes, or maybe I'm deluding myself. My PB (at 16) was 5:06 but those days are long gone.

Very interesting, but I think there needs to be a factor involved. How about 1.15. i.e. a 5:00:00 HIM would equal a 5:45 mile. By the sounds of the other commenters, it sounds like that may be closer. It would work for me I think. A 4:55 HIM and a 5:39 mile. I haven't done a 1 mile TT but that's about what I'd expect. Just throwing that out there

What kind of time difference would one expect in changing from a road bike with aerobars to a tri bike with aerobars over a HIM distance if using the same wheelset?
