Subject: Looking for others like me...weight loss support!

I've done the BT weight loss challenges...actually I organized the first one. I found them motivational but not the best way for me to lose weight as I know how to manipulate my glycogen storeage levels to efffect my weight...not really the best thing to do. I hope to get maybe 4-5 others like me struggling but determined to lose weight to offer each other support not competition. I'd love to have everyone committ to doing it for a year if possible...and even when things go bad and if your weight goes up be honest with each other and not hide.

This past year since last Labor day  I've lost 23 pounds...total lost 85. I have been at this since April 2003 and very determined, I keep at it all the time, have my ups and downs, but want to complete my weight loss journey this year if possible. I'd like to lose 15-18 pounds this year really only 1-2 pounds a month would be awesome for me.  For me slow and steady is best and really the only way for me. I'm not one of those folks who can just change things and lose 5-10 pounds in a month.

I eat very well....fruits, vegys, protein, complex carbs like sweet potatoes and wild rice in moderation....avoid white stuff...sugar, flour, white potatoes. I rarely cheat.....and it kind of sucks it is so hard, but I guess that is reality for me being close to 45 and a women.

Anyone interested?

I could always use motivation. I've lost 75 lbs so far (in 3 years time), and I have another 60+ to go. I do weight watchers, but extra motivation on the side, especially coming from a place I am eager to be (a triathlete) would be phenomenal.

I'm interested! A support group would be great.

My goal is size 4-6 (now size 16) in a year. I started June 1 so I have 9 months and 40+ lbs. to go. I'm doing alot of walking--training to walk a marathon at the end of November. It's working great. I'm getting firmer in the legs, I've lost a few inches and 8 lbs. Mostly I've got used to moving regularly.

I still have a ways to go with food. September's goal is adding one fruit and one vegetable a day, total two fruit and four vegetables. My big problem is eating after dinner. The training is helping with that. I meet a couple friends to swim two evenings a week and occasionally go for a walk on another.

You're sure right about how tough this is for a woman in her 40s...sigh.

I'll commit to a year, hopefully by then I'll be in maintenance-mode! It would be just terrific to give and receive support. I'm so impressed at how successful both of you have been.

Can a guy chime in on this? I'll be forty next July. I was suppossed to do the Timberman Sprint in NH(my brother lives in MA.) this year. Two surgeries derailed those plans for this year. Now I got medically cleared and I've got "the tri bug" again. I'm down 8lbs since I started 4 weeks ago. Slow and steady is my mantra!!! Just take it one day at a time, eat right, train hard and overtime the results will speak for themselves. That's at least what I'm telling myself. I'll keep ya posted on how it works!!! I'm sure I'll fall off the wagon( I'm actually for the pizza guy right now) but one day a week work hurt. I'm planning om doing the Timberman next year so I've commited to a year right now. I'vew got a bet with my brother on who's got the better bike and run time(I can tread water faster than he can swim). Anyway he just turned 50 so I'm ten years younger but at this point 50 pounds heavier. I'm hoping to even the odds and lose the weight over the next year.
Consider me in the support group if you'll take a guy. Good Luck!!! Chris

I think that I'd like to join up. I'm 5'8" and weighed 200 in 2002. I started training and racing and got it down to 165 in 2004. After a surgery and MANY bouts of shin splints, I've gone to between 177 and 180. I'd like to lose 15 to 20 pounds as well and can't seem to find any motivation, so definitely count me in!

I'd be interested. I would like to lose 10-15lbs, they have been stuck here on my since I turned 40 and had DS (at the same time), almost 5 years ago. They are the hardest to lose because they are the least annoying...when I head up any further I'm pretty good at getting it back to here, but then I get STUCK...

I eat fairly well, but late dinners with DH and weekends can get me off track. I log everything I eat with DietPower, and all my exercise here. I have the knowledge and tools, but can't seem to get over the hump.

Support and encouragement would be most wonderful! Please keep me in the loop!

I'd love to join in.  My goal is 160#.  I'm 178# right now.  And I'm a firm believer in "slow and steady."  That's the best way to keep it off!

Wow...lots of interest that is great!

Let's see if more folks are interested and then firm stuff up early next week.

A couple things...everyone should be using their blogs so we can check in on you and leave inspires.

Not sure about how else to do it...start a thread and just keep going. Do we want it public so everyone else can read it? Any ideas?

Hey, I would definitely be interested.

I lost 45lbs 4 years ago thru tri training and due to various reasons I have since gained the 45lbs back and added an additional 20lbs. Like you, I definitely need more than just the normal weight loss challenge. I am also good at manipulating things and losing weight fast only to gain it back. For me, this is going to be a long journey. I need to lose at least 70lbs and would like to lose around 85lbs and that's not going to happen over a few month's time. I don't need fast weight loss, I need to make lifestyle changes which are much harder. So, I'm definitely interested.

Another problem I have with the usual weight loss challenges is that so many people join up that it's hard to keep track of how everyone's doing and really offer any support. Would it be possible to form support groups of 6-8 people so that we can keep up with everyone in our group and really offer support. YOu could always add additional groups as more people wanted to join. When groups get too large I tend to lose track of people and it's easy to forget about someone who was struggling and just fropped out.

Scott

I use DietPower to log my food, but could do a daily tally here in my BTBlog as well. I sure don't mind being public about it, I can use all the accountability I can get, and maybe we will inspire others, too?

I like the idea of a smallish group, and a thread here that we keep going. Maybe one per day when it's new and exciting, then one per week when we slow down a bit (or mayb start a new thread when we reach a certain number of posts, more or less) - I was on eDiets for a few years and that's how we did it there.

I don't know what it's going to take for me to lose this extra weight, but I know the quick answer or short-term challenge isn't it. Heck, I even have a TROPHY from winning a challenge, but I didn't win my weight loss, it came right back.

I also like a place to share the extra challenge of losing weight WHILE being an athlete, it's such a fine balance and I am not in tune with it yet.

Just my afternoon musings...

Ooooo, I LOVE this idea.  Food is a daily struggle with me, and even though I've lost 56 lbs and am near my "goal weight" I've been there for the last year, AND more importantly, my body fat numbers are still WAY high.  I found out you can lose the weight and still be obese bodyfat wise.  I'm now a "skinny" fat person.... Pretty sad, but that's what happens when weight is the all important issue and you don't know the difference between losing body fat and muscle mass.

I've since spent a great deal of time educating myself about exercise and nutrition and finding what works best for me.  I say this because every person is different and what works for me may not work for you and your lifestyle.   I've been logging pretty much everything I eat on Diet Power since February, 2003 - even the BAD days, and boy have I had some of those!

Looking forward to discussions & support from this terrific BT community!

Tammy

I definitely think the thread should be public.  I've been so motivated and inspired by reading threads that I'm not involved in.  I think it would be great if it helps both us and those who don't choose to participate.

Kathy, I'm so glad you got this idea. Thanks! Long term support and check-ins will really help with these 40+ lbs.

I like Scott's idea of small groups. It's a chance to get to know people a little better. And Ann's idea of daily check-ins.

I can summarize my meals in the blog if that's what we decide to do.

I'm really looking forward to this!

Good ideas everyone!

The sad thing for me in challenges is that so many people just disappear.  My thought right now is start as one group and if activity level is to much maybe we could break it downinto smaller groups...but with 6-8 and if say 1/3 drop out the group gets a little small. In past challenges some groups are very active and supportive and others aren't.

Right now we are at 10...I think that is a managable number and will welcome more.

In using Blogs, I meant not necessary keeping public what you eat which is great if you do, but how you are doing and your workouts, food would be good. I see weight loss more mental than what I eat.  I have tried and become frustrated with the BT food log, maybe I need some lessons to get the hang of it.

With my tri coach, we have developed a strategy. I don't count calories as it is frustrating and bumping my head against the wall. Once in awhile when I get stalled I'll track all my food and calories for a week to see if I need to tweak stuff, but on-going I have found it counter productive. The reality is I eat the same things almost everyday...always same breakfast, normally same dinner with change in protein or veggies, lunch varies some but not much.

I also got frustrated using BT's nutrition log.  It took me a long time to get things set up in Diet Power the way I want them - VERY time consuming to set it up again in BT.  I enter a summary of what I eat, calories, carbs, proten, & fat each day in my log.  I also keep a excel spreadsheet for daily numbers (I'm weird that way - I like being able to analyze things from a gazillion different angles.

I'd really like to join too please.  I have 14 kgs (about 30 pounds) to lose.  I was further along the way there this time last year but put weight back on due to a slacking off in training and then injury.  I'm also looking at taking a year (possibly more) to lose this amount.

Count me in if there's still room. The regular loss challenge didn't work well for me last time because I realized that I was putting way too much emphasis on if I lost anything - I was weighing every time I went to the gym! (Not good!), so I've changed to weighing and getting my body fat tested once every 4-6 weeks. It's been much healthier for me.

Edit: At 242, looking to be between 175-190 at 23% bodyfat.

I'm in as well. I want to keep getting leaner to be faster. I'm definitely interested in long-term support and friendship more than just a pounds-lost challenge.

Edit: I use the BT nutrition tracker -- love it. I'd like to lose 20 pounds then decide if I need to lose more...

I'm 5'3" and currently around 186 ... heading for 40 below ... below that, anyway. Once I'm into non-Athena land, I'll go about setting my final goal based on body weight and body fat % ... and my goals.

Is there some sort of pledge we can recite to affirm that we WILL NOT DISAPPEAR from this group?

I pinky-swore to love my husband forever long before we ever got married, so I'm big on pledges.
