In typical Northern Virginia fashion, once again we've got a decent storm and panic is ensuing! I had to go up to the market to get one item I missed when I was shopping yesterday and there are folks cleaning the place out of milk, bread, toilet paper and of all things, boneless/skinless chicken breasts. None of which will do you any good when the power goes out. Add to it that the main lights had gone out, and you've got complete anarchy.

Got home and Casa Couture is dark. Called in the outage to the power company, it's a circuit breaker at a substation. Which actually isn't too bad, it's easier to fix something like that than to hunt down a downed line somewhere.

Now, I'm no end of the world survivalist, but really, it's not that hard to be prepared for this kinda stuff and I don't understand the last minute panic buying every time we either have a snowstorm or hurricane remnants come through. I know where my flashlights are, and the batteries, and I have a no-battery flashlight as well. I have a radio that runs on batteries. I have non-perishable food that doesn't require cooking to eat, and bottled water. Buying milk ahead of a storm does you no freaking good if you have to toss it out when the power comes back on. At least one of my landline phones is a "dumb" phone that doesn't require electricity either.

It's all pretty basic stuff. And yet, there are still freakouts and lack of preparedness. I can hang out here comfortably for at least a few days or until the battery on the laptop goes, in which case, all bets are off.

Thanks for the heads up Cindy.  I'm heading for the store as we speak.  I'm always the last to know about when to panic.  I thought it was only for snow.

It's really bad when storms like this ... or even a threatening snow storm ... cause you to RUN not walk to the nearest grocery store and fill a grocery cart with milk and loaves of bread ... and then standby and watch the shelves clear ... and you're just standing there with a whole cart of the stuff ... and the people with desperation in their eyes are glaring at you ... and you're laughing.

I've heard it happens.

I'm with BodyCheck. It doesn't take much to prepare. I n addition to everything outlined above, I actually have some MRE's stashed in my house along with common sense stuff like crackers and peanut butter ... and tons of bottled water. I keep a spare gas bottle for my grill ... and after the ice storm a couple of years ago when I was out of power for 10 days, I bought a new grill that has a side burner in case I need to heat anything.

But sometimes when the wind blows alot ... and really hard ... I have to clean the pine needles off of the roof ... desperate times call for desperate measure.

I'm so doing that when the first snowstorm rolls around.

I'm so doing that when the first snowstorm rolls around.  Got the power back, but there's still some winds so I won't be surprised if it goes out again.

Lived in Maryland for a year (Laurel) and had heard the stories of people lined up from checkout to the back wall of grocery stores when even only 6" of snow was predicted.

Growing up in Northern Illinois we were snowed in for 2 days, power went out, played bored games, got under a lot of blankets, had the cast iron ben franklin wood stove to warm up next to.  Put pans on top of the stove to heat up hotdogs and soup and such.

Those food horders in the D.C. area are wimps!!!
