What does the recovery look like for a 50k trail race?

I haven't done 50ks, but for the 50 mile runs I've done, I've recovered pretty quickly, much better than a hard run marathon.

I'm sure there is some variability with course difficulty, and how hard you run, but I find recovery from trail running shorter than road racing.

I'd say a hard run marathon, I'd be looking at 2 to 3 weeks before I started feeling somewhat normal. For a 50 mile race, I'd likely be feeling pretty good in 1 to 2 weeks.

+1 No 50K but I felt pretty good after my 50 mile trail run and was back to "normal" within a week or two.

This is encouraging.  I was hoping to just drop in a 50k before tri season (early march).  But was worried that it would kill my bike block.  Sounds like if I race the 50k, and maybe not worry about time too very much and just have fun, i'll be ready to go come may.

If it was a hard race, take a day for every two km before you race again. In other words, don't race again for a month. This is a general rule of thumb. Some are able to run sooner, some later.

That is encouraging. I have my first 50k in June and a 100 mile gran fondo (12,000' of climbing) a week later. I am concerned about how my quads are going to feel.

Agree.  much quicker recovery than a hard run marathon.  I presume, due to the pace being much slower and the terrain variation.

At least that's my experience.

Totally dependent on terrain, level of effort, and how it compares with your typical training runs.

I live in a really flat area. I've recovered from all the Texas area 50ks with no problems...a few days of soreness, but back to feeling normal in a day or two. Did a "mountain" 50k over in Tennessee with 6000+ feet of steep, technical ups and downs and it clobbered me for weeks. I could hardly walk the next day. MUCH worse than any marathon or even 50-mile recovery I've experienced.

Does anyone use resting heart rate to gauge recovery?

I am running Boston in April and Ironman Lake Placid is in July. I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. Any suggestions?

A few factors are at the basis of increasing running speed. In my experience these factors are: variety, “pain,” time and injury prevention.

So how does this “overreaching” differ from over training? It is a matter of degree and incorporating ample rest and recovery and sensible training progressions.
