UNC Wilmington used to have miles of trails on campus. They've torn a lot up but you can still get a good four mile loop on the trails on campus through the woods. The road around campus is low traffic and almost exactly a 3 miles.

Down by Wrightsville beach there is a 2.5 mile loop and another loop crossing the bridge into landfills neighborhood.

The nature preserve down 17 has miles and miles of dirt roads but it's a little ways away 25 minutes.

Carolina beach state park has an 8 mile trail connecting it to fort fisher. It's a little sandy but one of the most beatifil trails you'll run as it follows the water way most of the way,

There is NOT a lot of traffic free riding in the area. When I lived there 15 years ago you could ride around the city no problem. I wouldn't suggest it any more.

Go down to Carolina Beach State park and ride the roads around there to Fort fisher and back. Pretty ride that ends up being close to 15-16 miles there and bike. much less traffic.

Drive out 30 minutes down 74 to whir like lake and you'll have some empty roads to ride.

Not the best outdoor city for excersise. It has grown fast and the city didn't not adjust well to the growth.

I did love living there though but that was 15 years ago not sure how it has changed.

Topsail beach has bike lanes along the the main road, it is exactly 8 mikes each way. I use this frequently, and never had a problem.

There is a chance I will be relocating to this area in the next year or so. I am also very interested in learning about local tri clubs in the area. Also, any recommendations on the best areas to live in Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach for a triathlete - close to safe biking roads, close to gyms/pools? I would love to find some long, open roads for safe riding. Thanks in advance for any information!

Depending on where you work and how much you want to drive. I really like the Myrtle Grove and Monkey Junction area. It is getting a bit further away from Wrightsville Beach but that wouldn't bother me at all.

Thanks for the info! I work remote, so I don't need to worry about a commute (huge benefit)!!

Clubs in the area include cape fear cyclists, Wilmington road runners, ymca tri club, the dub tri club(ywca) and without limits coaching. Several swim groups swim in banks channel at wrightsville beach almost daily. Also many people ride their tri bikes after swimming, it's a short loop but fairly safe. And as others have suggested Carolina beach for biking and running.

The Wrightsville Beach loop is always a hot spot for runners. Its just across the drawbridge on the right next to the police station for public parking. Its a 2.4 mile loop that is very popular. If you want you can run down to shell island and make it a 6 mile loop.

Biking is the same way, if you park at the Police and Fire station and ride to one end of the island to the other and the n back to the stations its a 10 mile loop.

I also like to run at greenfield lake which is off of S3rd St. That is a 4.2 mile loop that has a lot of shade on it and is also part of the B2B course for the past several years.

If you want to get in a bunch of miles on the bike I would recommend parking on 421 and going up 421 into Pender county, hwy 421 and 210 and some of the other back roads in that area are well used by local bikers...

good luck
