Subject: Project management software

I've been tasked with looking at some project management software.  I know that many of you manage projects on here and who better to ask then the fine folks on here?

I don't have much experience with this kind of software, and we haven't really used anything with my team before this.  We are just starting a new grant research project and some of the guidelines/requirements with the reporting requires this kind of system to be in place.  While we already have something in place, I think we can do better.  I also want to switch to a cloud type of system, as our current system is really only available while on the network or if you remote in.

I have looked at the following so far;

- Insightly
- Microsoft Project/Dynamics
- Lab Guru
- Asana

Has anyone worked with these?  Have any other suggestions?  Here is a short list of what I would like, We really don't need all that much.

- Keep track of major / minor milestones
- Track activities
- Cloud record keeping
- Maybe a way to do some basic data analysis?  i can do this with statistical software I use, I'm thinking more of the 30000ft picture kind of stuff.

We do have some money to spend I would like to keep it under $1,000.

Please take this with a grain of salt, as I am not directly a Project Manager. Rather, I'm in IT training, with most of my clients being federal government or contractors. So I can see the trends of what they're doing. The most popular PM software for 2015 was Microsoft Project 2010 followed by 2013. Looks like I sent a few individual people to some other stuff, but set up lots of group training for MS Project. I'm not sure if that really helps you at all, but at least now I get to say that I did work while procrastinating! :D

I am not a project manager but our business has been having success using Smart Sheet (https://www.smartsheet.com/a). I'm pretty new to it so I do not know all the features but it does track milestones, provides updates, and offers numerous templates.

I primarily do BA and PM work now and have been a long term MS Project user, so that is what I'd recommend if you can afford it.

Our Project Management Office uses MS Project for all projects in the state. I'm an IT Director (not a PM), but I've used it on a few occasions and found it to be very good.

I'm a former PM.  It's been a few years, but I used  MS Project and liked it a lot.  Of course when I first started out we used graph paper and slide rules.

Thanks for the input guys.  Haven't decided what we are going with yet, I have to do the research still.  On the list of things to do, but first hand account is worth a lot!

We've dumped MS Project for SmartSheet. For basic functionality, it seems similar.
