Overcast
Total Time = 1h 02m 29s
Overall Rank = 132/310
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 11/21
Pre-race routine:

Tapped the week before, more due to work schedule, but I had planned on taking Friday off. No workout Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. Wasn't able to swim this week
Traveled to Wrightsville Beach on Friday. Went to packet pickup Friday night. Arrived to event around 6:45, 15 minutes behind schedule. Got marked and set up TZ. Chatted with some friends.
Event warmup:

Light stretching and then some laps and practiced some turns.
Swim
  • 05m 15s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim for me. Had registered at a 1:36 pace, and caught two swimmers.
I tried some flip turns on the laps where we changed lanes. First time in a race
What would you do differently?:

Use more flip turns on the lane changes.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Overall a good T1 for me. It was a long run from pool into TZ were my bike was on the far side. Pushed pretty hard, and passed 1 person at least in TZ, no one passed me
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 28m 11s
  • 9 miles
  • 19.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Resisted going too hard. I have killed my run doing that in the past. Front brake kept shifting into wheel requiring some adjustment.

Tried to avoid a speed bump and almost whipped out! I would have hit a mailbox.

Got passed by 7 riders I think, and passed 1
What would you do differently?:

nothing pretty happy with this bike at this point in the year
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Had trouble racking fork first and had to turn the bike around.
Not sure why I sat down to put shoes on. Could have shaved 19 seconds off
What would you do differently?:

Test racking before race. Slide shoes on while standing.
Run
  • 25m 56s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 11s  min/km
Comments:

This confirms my suspicion that two years ago the course was short.

Ran negative which I very rarely do. Need to push a little harder
What would you do differently?:

Overall pretty happy with this run
Post race
Warm down:

walked around and cheered on other runners

What limited your ability to perform faster:

only me

Event comments:

Second time running this race. Really nicely done. A couple of snags with timing, and the entrances collapsing (inflatables) , but the volunteers were great, and there was a good turnout. Water heading out of TZ, at the one and two mile points (out and back). I ran thru there may have been gator-aide or similar

Pizza, bananas, water and soda at the finish. I didn't wait around for the awards.
Race Swag included shirt (better than the one two years ago), winter had, and mouse pad.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
