This is my third year of triathlons. Last year I did two HIMs. Chattanooga and Augusta. I loved Chattanooga. The city and race we're great. Augusta. The race was pretty good. The city was not great IMO. This year I'm doing HIM NC. So next year I am planning on doing my first full distance Ironman. I'm considering Chattanooga, NC, Louisville, and maybe Maryland. Would love to hear people's opinions on these races? I'm located in Charleston so Chattanooga and NC are closest. I really want something driving distance. < 10 hours. I'm leaning towards Chattanooga because I did the HIM there and loved it.

I have not done any of the races you're contemplating, but I voted for Chattanooga, because it kind of sounds like you want to be talked into it.
You loved the half, loved the town, and its close. What's not to like?

Haha probably true but figured I'd see if anybody came out with something like "OMG you'd be a fool not to do Louisville" Chattanooga is my preferred and most likely it's between that and NC.

I voted for NC because that will be my first IM. I know several people who have done it when it was B2B, and they loved it. IMMD would be my second choice because I suspect that it won't be around for much longer.

I've raced IMChoo, IMLoo and IMNC (when it was B2B). I don't think you could go wrong with any of the races. If you have already raced the Chattanooga course, why not go for Louisville. The bike course is challenging, he run is kinda cool, and the 4th Street Live finish is not to be missed. Louisville is also a great city to visit. I vote Louisville.

That's a good point about Louisville. I forgot about the finish line which looks very cool.

Title should be which SE US Ironman...

None of these races inspire me. The only reason I would tow the line at any of them would be a good fit on my calender. Right now none of them are for the next year or 2. Beyond that who knows.

Technically MD is considered Mid-Atlantic but that's a minor distinction. I think flying to a triathlon makes for far more complicated and expensive logistics than just hopping in my car and driving. I think you're missing out, IMO, if none of these races interest you. I've heard good things from many about Louisville and Chattanooga was terrific. For me, it's about the city and the race. I raced Augusta. Course was fine. City sucked. There are many other races further away that I would love to do but time and money are always a factor. Ironman 70.3 St. George is on my wish list.

Are you only looking at mdot races or would you do a full distance from another company?

For half the entry price (or even less in some cases), there are usually some pretty attractive alternatives.

I live in Louisville and God willing will do this race in 2017, hopefully with a pregnant wife waiting for me at the finish. The food here is among the best, plenty of cool things to do, a well supported race, tough bike and an interesting swim start. But I may be a bit biased

For your first what about doing something like Cozumel if you have the $$?

I voted for Chatt, I did the inaugural full and loved the race and the town.  The wife and I will definitely be back... to race or visit we did like it that much there.

I live in Calgary... they are all way South and East from here. My daughter has CP so I don't plan on flying with a bike and a wheelchair. Whistler or CDA suit me fine. The kids are staying with Grandma when I go to ITU worlds in Coz. Not willing to ask that twice in 2 years if I give Ironman another go. I would drive to Utah for St George.

Not necessarily but I've done two m-dot races and felt they were really well done.

Yeah. Flying with a bike seems like a big hassle but I'll just have to deal if I ever get to St. George. I've told my wife she only has to come to me for a full distance ironman. Other races I just go by myself.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.
