Subject: Do I Drop IMTX now or roll the dice?
Lots of rumblings that IMTX bike course is not happening this year, that they are trying to find alternatives, but at this moment, no bike route has been determined / permitted. Two days ago the Houston news published a story making the race seem pretty questionable.

http://www.chron.com/neighborhood/woodlands/news/article/Route-for-...

Today is the last day to pay the $50 fee and transfer my entry to another race. I don't want to do another race as they are so far off and I'm ready to race in May. But, if they end up going with a really lame, crit type set up where the bike course just goes around and around and around in a circle with numerous laps, that's not a good alternative. Most of the time IM pulls something out of their rears and comes up with something, but in this instance, it seems it is not going to happen.

Any oddsmakers opining on the chances of IMTX happening, and if it happens, being something other than loops and loops?

Reading that article would not scare me away.

They have 2 alternate routes set up and pending approval, sounds like it will not be a problem. WTC will make it happen even if they have to make a couple extra donations to some townships.

Given that you say you are ready to race and don't want to do another one, I'd say stick it out and hope the organizers pull something together.  And, if they don't, hope they 'do right' by the athletes in trying to make up for it.  A loop course (within reason) should not be too bad.  And I've heard that if they do put it on the Grand Parkway stretch, at least the roads would be in awesome shape.  There are positives and negatives to most course layouts.  You just have to stay flexible in your expectations since you don't know what the positives or negatives will be yet.  Focus on the fact that it will be 112 miles, regardless.

One alternate route was already denied. (http://trstriathlon.com/TRSForum/discussion/1906/ironman-texas-aquathon/p1)

I'd consider transferring.

I chose to stick with TX. I hope they get something figured out. This will be my first 140.6 and I'd sure hate for it to get canceled but none of the other races I looked at would work with my schedule this year.

Thanks for the updated info. I pulled the trigger and requested a transfer. I guess that means I will just be even more ready.

At the very least, you won't be obsessively refreshing forum webpages hoping for answers for the next few weeks.

Which race did you transfer to? Good luck!!!

Why did Corporate not notify the participants? This is the first I have heard of the race being in question. To top it off Ironmans website is having trouble. Can not navigate anywhere on it.

I talked to Ironman Events, and she says there is no danger of the event being canceled. There might be a change in the course, but no cancellation. We will see.

Just read that the bike course for IMTX  is now only a 94 mile course. Kind of a drag.

Yes, a drag. Because of money age and a few other things, this might be my only Ironman, and now it will have an"*" behind it. I paid for a 140.6 mile race, and now they wont even let me transfer. I guess the only thing I can do is race and deal with the *.

I don't blame you. Some people will say that it's more about the journey to get to the start line through all your training and less about race day, but there is certainly a level of disappointment I'd feel. Best of luck on race day, and I hope you get to do the full 140.6 at some point.

If you don't care much about your AG placement, could always add a few miles on your own if it means that much

Wonder how one could add 18 miles to the route without ticking off the officials? You would think Ironman could have us double back on one part of the existing course for 9 miles.

It's disappointing a little since this is my first "full", and now it's a 140.6. It will still be great though!! I'm prepared and can't wait

I really feel for all of you getting cut short, but it is part of the crazy reality we deal with in big events like this. #firstworldproblems.

On a side note I wouldn't add the extra mileage to the bike *until you have crossed the finish line. Go grab your bike out of transition and if you are able ride 18. You'll still get your total mileage, albeit not during the race, but maybe you'll feel less "violated"(is that the right word?). There's a good chance you'd get DQ'd for going off course.

Good luck to everyone racing. If I were a betting man, I'd say no more IM down there after this year, who knows though, but I guarantee it doesn't sit right in people's craw. < cowboy term

On a more serious note...don't let this ruin your day.  Ironman is really hard whether it's 140.6, 110.6, or 150.6.  Not all courses are even the same anyway in terms of difficulty and I don't think IMTX is considered a "fast" course to begin with.

To be perfectly honest, at the end of the day, nobody else really cares if your IM is short or not...or your finishing time for that matter.  For 95% of age groupers, triathlon is a personal achievement that really only you should judge yourself on.  So go out there and give it your best and have fun.  I can pretty much bet that on the last 4 miles of the marathon you won't be thinking that a 94 mile bike course wasn't challenging enough for you to test your limits.

Right?

Honest answer?  No.  And I actually won it.    Does it matter if there was only one person in it (Public 45+)? Actually two but the other guy crashed into a ditch

But 26 miles wasn't my goal today

Someone made a good point on ST.   The swim is going to be warm and really gross, it's going to be windy and ungodly hot and humid, and the run will be a sufferfest.  No one will doubt your accomplishment come race day.  Enjoy!

Ironic, I get the news that the entire race will be 122 miles, and I just finished a 122 mile training ride about and hour before I read the email. I will make the most of it, but will have to compete in another race to do the full 140.6. The course in one section almost looks like a fishing reel rats nest, I hope it's well marked when we get to it. Good luck to all that will be racing.

I am toying with the idea of bringing my trainer with me, and jumping on it after I finish the marathon. Would I still have the "140.6" bragging rights, if I finished 18 miles on the trainer?

I think you would get extra bragging rights if you actually managed to get back on a bike after finishing that marathon...

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?
