Hi,

My name is Lawrence, earlier this year I made the goal to complete Kona Ironman 2020 in memory of my dad. I grew up in Hawaii and my family and I had volunteered several times for water stands, set up etc. I grew up playing soccer, tennis, baseball, but never any endurance sport like a triathlon. I have been running over the last 2.5 months training for a local 5 mile race and I am now beginning to commute to work (12.5 miles per day). I have been an on and off again exerciser never staying consistent like I have these last few months(running 3 times a week and now biking 4-5 days). I started looking into better ways to train and using heart rate zones which led to researching multi-sport watches. I am wanting to purchase the Garmin 920xt tri-bundle, but for the price am wondering if heart rate training while swimming is as beneficial as running or cycling since it is not a "live feed". Would it be better to get the basic 920xt with hr monitor or go ahead and save for the tri-bundle? I am hoping that if I purchase a multisport watch and begin training using heart rate zones I can begin to see more steady gains. I know it is not something I need but it would be a very useful tool. What are your all's suggestions or any other products that are as comparable to the 920xt? Thank you for your help!

-Lawrence

To get the most out of any device like the 920XT, you need to analyze the data after the training session. That will give you a significantly better overview of the session and help you draw conclusions about how well it went and what to improve upon.

The 920XT is an excellent watch. There's really not anything else that can replace it in its entirety.

The 920 is an awesome watch, no doubt! But to be fair, going from having no watch to ANY watch is a big gain. The 310XT or 910XT can be found really cheap these days if you do not need the HR for swimming (honestly, do you?). HR for run and bike is a must though.

I couldnt go a day without my 920xt so if you go for it you wont be dissapointed. I suggest you get the regular HR pack.

Thank you for your reply, that has been my biggest question is how useful heart rate is during swimming.

I agree with the above comment that recommended the standard running HRM. I recently purchased the 910XT with premium HRM (cannot be used for the swim) because I got such a good price on it ($125 shipped). I absolutely LOVE my watch. Going from no watch to a watch, you would be fine with either of the two watches. If you can get the 910 below $200, I'd go that route. But, if you are wanting to use the watch as a daily watch to wear as well - not just train in, the 920XT would be worth the extra money IMO.
