Total Time = 1h 15m 43s
Overall Rank = 154/420
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 13/29
Pre-race routine:

Got up. Ate a banana and I slice of wheat bread with pnut butter. Packed up transition bag, bike, and pump and headed out at 0530. Didn't make it out of the neighborhood before I realized I forgot my running shoes. Returned for shoes and left again.
Event warmup:

No warm up, just hung out with Tim Middleton and Karen from Team RWB.
  • 08m 24s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 06s / 100 meters

Only 2 swim practices since last September
What would you do differently?:

Swim more before first race of the season
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s

Great transition - 2nd out of 29 in age group. But the bike starts up hill and I had trouble getting my foot into my left shoe and lost alot of time.
What would you do differently?:

For this race I should have put mu tri shoes on and run in them.
  • 40m 48s
  • 12.54 miles
  • 18.44 mile/hr

Weak bike leg. This is my weakest leg of the race. I only had 2 or 3 training rides in the last month.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s

3rd of 29 in age group. Very good transition was able to pass 2 or 3 who arrived before me.
What would you do differently?:

  • 24m 23s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 53s  min/km

Could have been faster. Had a side stitch during 2nd lap.
Post race
Warm down:

Had chocolate milk. Signed up for a massage then went through food line. Egg and spinach fritatta was delicious.Went to the finish line to see Tim Middleton finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

normal lack of training during the off season.

Event comments:

This is a great early season race. The venue and race course is great. I love the open water format pool swim.

Course: Pool swim set up for open water swim format with buoys. The first buoy is crowded but the wave thins out and it is much easier to pass than a regular pool swim. Also easier to swim straight since you can see the lines at the bottom of the pool.

I'm doing the 22 week sprint tri program and the 2 mile bike ride it starts with is not very challenging. I see this as a opportunity to train the right way and challenge myself. Any ideas?

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

Tri clubs offer all of us, from beginner to advanced athlete, a venue in which we can realign our perspective of what “fast” and “far” are, pushing us to new and greater heights of performance.

Club or group workouts are very motivating and soon you’ll start feeling like a triathlete, making you less likely to flake out.
