You'll recall we deduced the OP identity last year and disclosed it in the thread.  This year his bib number at IronmanUK is 604.

It definitely wrecked me, I feel thoroughly broken today.

That said, I tend to recover fairly quickly so hopefully any fatigue carried into Sunday's race will be marginal. Given I have such low base fitness, I suspect the fitness and conditioning gained by doing my longest cycle of the year, and my longest run of the year will hopefully more than offset any fatigue I carry into the race.

I completed 132km of cycle at an average speed of 20.3kph (including stops). Based on previous data, I expect to leave t1 at 1:45. This means I will have to average at least 20.6kph on the day.

Given that I will have to ride an additional 30 miles with twice as much climb, having completed a 3800m swim - things look pretty bleak.

That said I did have a significant mechanical problem (seat clamp broke due to over-torque), which definitely cost a fair bit of time. Also, not having to deal with traffic lights etc. should also help the average speed a little bit. I think race day might allow me to push a bit harder although it will likely lead to more pain on the run. With a bit of luck, I might be slightly fitter for next week than yesterdays ride. The brick I did two weeks ago definitely made me a little faster this time around.

All in all, I think there is a low to moderate chance I will complete the bike without being cut-off the course.

After the bike I did a 32km run in almost exactly 4 hours. Not an especially great pace, but surely enough to finish. That said, add in the swim, a tougher bike and me having to push on to meet the bike cut-off, I might be in bad shape starting the run, so I can't take for granted that I will have enough in me to finish in time.

So I would say that I am not doomed, but I am at great risk of not finishing.

Which is pretty much how I felt going into last years race...

As Bruce said, I am bib 604.

I was first and foremost being painfully lazy.  Didn't look it up.

Thanks guys, although I am afraid to say that I likely won't be racing. I've been ill with fever and what appears to be a chest infection since Monday. It shows no signs of shaking, but even if it does, I am assuming I will not be fully recovered for Sunday morning now, even if I feel okay.

If anyone knows to the contrary, then let me know but for now I am assuming it is unwise to do anything as strenuous as an Ironman days after an illness.

I'm somewhat gutted. Such is life though, at least I should have plenty of chances to have another go...with an adequate level of preparation of course!

The general rule I go by for training or racing sick is if it below the neck, or a fever, then don't do it. So you are sort of double whammied there. If you clear up a couple days prior, go for it I say. Worst case is a DNF. Remember..

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
