Ironman
21C / 70F
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 42m 36s
Overall Rank = 1445/3000
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 74/
Pre-race routine:

Spent the day before at the briefing, buying some "really needed" merchandising items from the IM shop, visiting a small town nearby. Went for dinner to a great place famous for their vegetables, a good friend sent us a bottle of champagne, so what would you do, refuse it? Of course not!
Got up at 5.30, had 2 PB toasts, 1 banana, 1 coffee and walked to the transition area, in front of our hotel
Event warmup:

After putting my drinks and nutrition in the bike, just walked a bit and talked to other athletes that came from all over the world. Water was cold so no warm up.
Swim
  • 42m 20s
  • 1900 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Since I got in the water and did not feel comfortable, with a continuous feeling that I was about to throw up until got out. Stress? Too much food last night? Too quick breakfast?
What would you do differently?:

Work on my speed more - control nutrition the day before and the morning of the race.
Transition 1
  • 08m 30s
Comments:

Took it easy after the bad feeling during the swim, talked to the guy next to me that came from Michigan. When got helmet, shoes and shades on felt much better, and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Be more focussed on what I need to do during the T1.
Bike
  • 3h 36m 32s
  • 90 kms
  • 24.94 km/hr
Comments:

Excellent organized one loop course, the climbs were tougher than expected but felt good. My nutrition were Cliff bars and gels (and the bananas offered at the aid stations with Powerbar drink), 1/2 bar and 2 gels every hour at 20 min intervals, and felt really good!
What would you do differently?:

Train my speed on the bike, endurance is built!
Transition 2
  • 04m 11s
Comments:

Quick transition, left the bike on the rack, run to the tent to get rid of helmet and shoes, get shocks and running shoes on, 2 gels on the pockets and go!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 11m 3s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 06m 13s  min/km
Comments:

Started feeling good -those bricks did work-, my Garmin on my wrist did help me to pace as I wanted - plenty of food and drinks at the aid stations, drunk only sports drinks, water to keep my head cool, only 2 gels during all the run, did not fell hungry. Music pushed me a bit specially at km 5 and 15.
What would you do differently?:

Work on my speed, endurance is there!
Post race
Warm down:

After crossing the finish line :) got my finisher medal and t-shirt, and enjoyed a quick lunch at the tent with other athletes (2 sandwiches, some nuts, and 2 pilsners that tasted like cold water in the middle of the dessert!) - after picking up the stuff, went with my wife for a proper lunch and a nice tempranillo wine (ribera), took a shower and drove back to Madrid. Actually she did while I had a looong siesta!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to work more on speed and strength rather than endurance.

Event comments:

Extremely well organized race compared to other I had done previously. This franchise is expensive but worth it, as the experience is fantastic!

Awesome race and you did a really good job of adjusting to the stomach discomfort.

The speed will come!

Fantastic job Juan!!! Keeping up that kind of pace and saying "endurance is there I need more speed" is nothing short of inspirational!

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
