I have my first IM coming up later this year. My friend, who is an ultra distance rider (200 & 300 mile events) wants me to join him on a charity ride three weeks before my IM. It is a century ride (not race). Is that too close or just a good tune up for the IM?

Good tune up. Three weeks out from an IM is often when you do some of your last really big bike rides. In fact, as close as two weeks out I will do a five to six hour ride (if it fits in to my life schedule) with significant effort above IM pace, followed by a one to one and a half hour run. Then taper begins and you should be so ready....

I think you would be totally fine and would encourage you to do it.

Sounds like the perfect tune-up to me. I would be all over that invitation.

3 weeks before should be almost ideal for a long ride. Make sure you're not pushing it too much and that you stay hydrated and fueled. A good tune up, that should be an excellent opportunity to test nutritional strategy, etc.

It can be a great training ride

as long as your buddy doesn't ride you into the ground (you know...because it's only 100 miles...)

Thanks for the replies. I will go ahead and book this one. I won't worry too much about my buddy pushing me. He has great endurance but I pack a lot more power. Should be fun.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
