Pre-race routine:

Got up and ate, fed the dogs and jumped in the car for the 45 minute drive to the race site. Once I got there I went to packet pick up then hit the port a loo then back to the car to drop off my bag and finish getting ready.

The announcer started up and talked about the veterans benefit charitable groups that would benefit from this race. Then the local VFW presented colors and a local guy did an amazing rendition of the national anthem.

Pretty soon they lined up the 10k peeps and we were off.

We started out on an out and back street then started up the hill toward where I did the King of the Hill run a couple months ago. Fortunately this one wasn't up a sandy hill, but it was a climb! I just kept chugging away.

About 2 miles in we crested the hill and there was a water stop, yay. I didn't bring a water bottle because it's a 10k and I knew there would be a couple aid stations. But it did get hot and I was ready for the water.

Then back down the hill and on through some neighborhoods. The breeze felt good so when we were headed south and had no breeze it was oven-like. About 4 miles in I started hoping for another AS because we were headed south. As I turned east I found the breeze, and an AS! It was about 4.75 miles in to the run. Better late than never I suppose.

There was one girl who was ahead of me for the first couple miles then behind me for the rest of the race. We didn't talk much because she had headphones in.

As I was approaching the finish line the 5k was taking off so I got to watch them head out. The usual fasties leading, of course. There were some RWB so I cheered for them and the Blue Star Moms bringing up the rear, so I cheered for them, then crossed the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I've been recovering so not running consistently but this was still a pretty good run.

Maybe, in hind sight, I would have brought a small bottle of water.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, found water. Talked with the Wounded Warrior Project lady and the Purple Heart guy.

When the 5k people started coming in I went over to cheer for them. When the rucksack RWB guy came in I went up to meet him. Cliff. Super nice guy and an ultra runner. He and I cheered the others in and went to meet the other two RWBers when they came in.

We all got a photo and watched the kids race then headed our separate ways.

Cliff won the rucksack division. Interestingly, if I'd been a year older I would have placed in the 50-59, or if I'd done the 5k I would have placed (based on my 5k time) but as it was, I got 4th. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

recovering, heat, and of course, genetics

Event comments:

This was a great small community race. It is, currently, the only one in the area for Memorial Day so I hope it grows. There were lots of volunteers and the course was well marked. Going on the trail for a bit was fun too.

Nice run, great chance to be out with the RWB crew.  Congrats on a good run!  I could totally feel what you described with the nice breeze, then the areas with no breeze being icky hot.  Yay to breezes!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
