Subject: Dizziness exiting water
Hi all,

Just finished my first Sprint Tri and overall it was a great experience, and it was the first of many more to come.
The open water swim itself, which is what I was most nervous about, went far better than I expected and as I approached the end I was already planning on darting towards T1.
However as I was helped out by the marshal I struggled to bring myself to my feet, and from there the journey was less a run and more like a stagger back from the pub after an all-dayer! I was very dizzy and disorientated.
A family member took a picture of me as I walked away from the water, and my face was an unhealthy shade of bright red!
By the time I had stripped off for the bike I was back to a reasonable level of stability, and once I was off on the bike I felt great again.
I didn't swim too hard, and I wasn't gasping for air when I left the water, so I don't think it was a fitness issue.
I'm guessing its something to do with blood flow/pressure?
It wasn't a pleasant experience, any ideas how to stop it happening again?

It is likely the result of going from horizontal to vertical quickly after the end of the swim. Its happened to me as well. you're swimming and exerting yourself in a horizontal position and when you stand up and head out of the water, your whole body is adjusting to your new position. Not sure how to fix it, but I take a couple seconds once my feet touch to gather my wits and then move forward.

I don't know why, but this happens to me from time to time. Congrats on first race!

First of all, congrats on your first race! I've experienced something similar myself. Someone smarter than I recommended kicking a bit harder the last 25 to 50 yrds of the swim to help pump blood that may have pooled in the legs if not kicking very hard. Worth trying anyway.

Do you turn your head to one side to breathe? If so, the water pressure building in one ear can cause you to be disoriented.

I had a race where I nearly fell over after the swim, but after that I started using ear plugs and it has never happened again.

Just one more possible cause...

As others have said,'horizontal to vertical too quick can cause it from time to time. Cold water can make it worse for some reason.

+1 on the same as others. I sometimes feel like I want to puke running into t1. I try to use my breathing to even things out.

Thanks for the response guys.
Looking back at the swim I probably didn't use my legs half as much as I would in the pool, what with the extra buoyancy of the wetsuit, I probably relied on my arms to much. I'll definitely up the kicks next time especially near the end??

Earplugs are a big help for me if the water is cold. if I don't wear them then, I would probably fall over onto the person in front of me.

What you are experiencing is most likely an ear issue. Though all of the other responses are spot on...I'll explain.
Your balance is controlled by your inner ear. When you get water in your ears it can throw things off. Now, if that water is cold that makes things MUCH worse. And yes, standing up too quickly doesn't allow for your equilibrium to neutralize and you feel dizzy. Why doesn't this happen in a pool? Because you likely stand at the wall every 200 meters or so so you get a chance to drain it a bit. If you were to jump in and swim a mile then jump right out, I'd bet that you have the same problem.
I do a open water swim every year in lake superior. 2 miles, cold, cold water, big rolling waves. The finish line there is hilarious. Everyone looks totally drunk. The finish line photo people much have a laugh there.
Ear plugs of some sort will make it go away.

I wear the wax type ear plugs that you can get at any Cvs type store. This helped resolve this issue for me.

I'm usually a little disoriented too, but typically recover after being vertical for 10-15 seconds.

This is also true if I finish a swim set at the pool and climb out too quickly after.

Must be blood moving back to where it belongs.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
