Question is in my subject heading...Not that I am anywhere near doing an IM (I'm years away, to say the least.)

I'm sure in depends on your age group, so I'm betting that the 30-34 yr/old group is probably the most competitive, but I'm biased since that is my age group.

Also can you qualify for Kona in an Oly race or is it limited to IM's and HIM's????

Best bet is to go to an official IM race website and look up results by age class for the past few years, as race day weather will affect finish times. They will designate Kona qualifiers with a little red Ironman to the right of each qualifiers record. I'm guessing that 30-34 AG is going to be sub 10 for the first few guys that qualify.

You can only qualify at Ironman brand IM races and their 70.3 series. Go to www.ironman.com and get all the details. If you qualify at a 70.3 event you will have to do a full IM event before they let you go to Kona, so as to prove you can do the distance. Good luck.

I'm not sure about this. My buddy's first IM was Kona. He had to finish a half before he could do the IM. He got in with the lottery so, you could be correct

ooops - my bad. You're right, if you get in with the lottery you must do a 70.3 or IM before being allowed into Kona. I was thinking you had to do a full IM before Kona whether you get in via the lottery or a 70.3 race. Looks like a 70.3 qualification gets you straight to Kona. Sorry for the confusion.

TriResults.com has some really good reports you can run sorting all IMQ times by event, AG, etc....

Remember, how hard an AG you're in is all relative (trust me - it took me a few yrs and near misses before I finally got that Kona slot so I'm an 'expert' on the subject :o). M30-34 is arguably the most talented division, but it typically has the most slots allocated as well, which makes is easier. Conversely, a very talented W50-54 whom I coach went <11:30 at IMF 1 yr and didn't get to go (typically only 1 slot in that AG). So which is harder?

Hope that helps.

I'm in the 30-34 AG and will begin my Kona qualification quest next season.  Looks like I need anywhere from 9-11 hours depending on the course...9:30-10 on average.

Yup, all depends on the course ........ I can't remeber their BT id, but someone ran AZ this year in just over 10 and got a slot by roll-down.

At IMFL you can expect to need to be in the 9:30 range ..........

One day, oh yes, one day .........

Definitely depends on the course, the weather and also who happens to show up on race day. I *think* that for most IMNA your best bet is to finish around the 9:30 hr mark (for the 30-34AG)
