Samsung Night Run 10K - Run10k

CDMX, Distrito Federal
60F / 16C
Total Time = 49m 50s
Overall Rank = 66/1142
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 11/48
Pre-race routine:

Got there a bit late so no warmup or anything. I did do a hard 90 minute bike workout this morning so legs were not rested. I figure it was my first high altitude race and really wasn't serious
Event warmup:

no warmup
  • 49m 50s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 59s  min/km

First of all, I made the mistake that this race would be ranked on chip time not gun time. I started from the very back and spent the first 5K or so passing people. I think I probably passed close to 1000 people during this race without exaggerating. I think that I was at least 2 minutes slower than I could have run. I had to stop a few times as the course got bottlenecked at some points. Also burned a lot energy ducking left and right.
What would you do differently?:

Get there earlier and get at least a short warmup in. Also, start near the front since I can have someone to race with. Finally, I haven't had a lot of training before this race and in fact had only 1 run longer than 10K in the last 2 months.
Post race
Warm down:

no real cooldown, just walked around and talked with coworkers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training and not lining up near the front where I would be able to run with people close to my pace and actually race someone

The night before my first triathlon I didn’t sleep very well. My thoughts were on the next day, the enormity of the task looming frighteningly close.

The cause of the sleeplessness could be anxiety to get out and compete but more often than not the inability to sleep is a fear of what might happen, of what might go bump out on the race course.

My hunger stays under control well enough throughout the day eating every couple hours but come 9:00 pm I am again craving something sweet and if I don't eat I don't sleep.

My trouble is this: I work overnights, 11pm-7am. How many hours should I keep between workouts? What constitutes a 'day'? How does rearranging days affect the overall plans?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
