The elite of the elite do DL and thats great - in no way was I making a statement about their athletic ability or training. I guess I'm just a 'time trial' type guy. And 'extreme' hatred was embellished but if I ever had a chance to race in DL race; I'd do it but I doubt I'd get the right experience due to the time I'd come out of the water in the swim! Haha Fact is that ITU racing attracts the best talent and the format makes them even stronger, you can't suck at swimming and expect to be given starts by your Federation. Careful, Bo. Saying that doing well in DL racing requires more balanced triathletes with no significant weaknesses is heresy to some of the posters here.
Well a recent Olympic champion might be one of the least balanced of the bunch. You mean Gwen? 11 seconds off out of the swim, top 5 bike, top run? That recent Olympic champion? Or did you mean Allistar? 6 seconds off oput of the swim, 4th bike, 3rd run? That one? |

First you said "best triathlete". Then you said "best balanced triathlete". I'll give you the latter (which you amended to). The former????? Why in the world would someone running long course want to be a balanced triathlete? You're in the water for an hour.....and, if you spend the majority of your training time on the discipline that's going to take the longest to complete.......that's where you'll make your greatest gains. You can't look at (well, maybe you can) people running short course and say they're "better" than their professional peers running long course. Is U. Bolt the "best" runner in the world? There's a far side comic where some dog's bragging to his buddies about going to get "tutored" that suddenly comes to mind. |

Well, except that the most balanced of the DL triathletes (see my post above) could both be in the running for any HIM title right now......see Gomez......and perhaps any IM title in the future....see Frodeno. The simple fact is.....you'll never be truly fast at triathlon of any distance unless you are proficient at all three disciplines. Yeah, you can have a weapon that is well above the others.......but the good triathletes are all in the top 2-5% at EVERY discipline......balance son......balance. This ain't 1985. |

There's a far side comic where some dog's bragging to his buddies about going to get "tutored" that suddenly comes to mind. The Bolt-Kipchoge comparison is incorrect - from Olympic distance triathlon to Ironman would be more like 5 or 10k to marathon in the running world. Since Kipchoge has medaled in both the 5k and marathon at the Olympics, we would expect our short course, DL athletes to have success if they make the jump to 70.3 or IM. Given the current IM World Champion, that would seem to be the case. So, the best at ITU racing will often enjoy success in longer distance if they decide to make the jump. Shane |

Expert 2852 Pfafftown, NC | Subject: RE: I have an insane hatred of draft legal racing How long would that jump take? How long did it take Frodeno? For all we know, the greatest long course triathlete of all time got cut from his Olympic team this year. I'm talking about right now. I don't think it's possible to be trained up for LC and SC at the same time. Hence my previous comments that's it's futile to compare the two or say one is "best". That's all. Or....maybe we'll see one of the Brownlee's in Kona? Why not? Edited by nc452010 2016-08-23 6:47 PM |

I'm not sure you know why you're arguing with me. Sure.....you asked how long it would take for a top level SC triathlete to switch over to long course and be succesful, you just didn't see how it could be......the answer is immediately. You have no idea how those folks train or what it takes to be successful at SC. You can't use yourself, or me, or 90% of the people who do beer league triathlon as a measure.....you have to use TRIATHLETES. btw......it was a few years after 09 and 10 for Frodeno......he was still doing SC then.....he actually finsihed third his first IM when he moved up....after winning HIM's. And yes, "Don".....you obviously missed the windmill reference.....must be all those punches you've been taking here. Edited by Left Brain 2016-08-23 7:02 PM |
