Total Time = 1h 29m 40s
Overall Rank = 237/504
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 27/38
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early as I had a 1 hr 20 min drive to the race site. Ate my normal breakfast and everything went smooth getting there.
Event warmup:

Stretched out and swam a little in the water to get used to the temp. Loosened up the sholders also.
Swim
  • 09m 34s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

Time trial start made the swim a pain. There was no seeding of peoples performance and the 5 second count in between was very fast. From start to finish, it was just a mass of people. It made the swim uncomfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much I could have done better. It came down to race organization for it to be easier on people swimming.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

Lost time because I forgot to get the swimskin off prior to getting on the shoes. Probably could have picked up 30 seconds from that mistake
What would you do differently?:

Practice practice practice. I keep putting off practicing transitions and it kills me on race day.
Bike
  • 47m 13s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Very nice course. I was very happy with my bike performance today. The final 5 miles of the course were great for me. I need to learn how to push a little more throughout the entire race.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more on the trainer with an long term even power output.
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Much better T2 this race. Things went much better today.
What would you do differently?:

Just like T1, I need more practice at this.
Run
  • 28m 17s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 40s  min/km
Comments:

Good run for me. I felt comfortable on the run for the first time this year. Just like the bike I need to work on pushing the pace to what I did on the last mile. The last mile of the run was great for me. The second mile, which had a lot of climbing, was hard.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around while drinking water near the finish line. Stayed in the shade to drop down the core temp.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Better transitions, better management in the swim (dealing with large amount of bodies through the entire swim), and build up more endurance. Tough as this is my first year back and only my 3rd race in 3 years!

Event comments:

Great race! I love the course. It was well organized but they need to figure out how to manage the swim portion better. If you are going to do a time trial start on the swim, please ask for a projected swim time and then organize your numbers and starting based on that. It will make for a much more enjoyable swim leg.

The day of the triathlon was one of the best days of my life. I felt strong and healthy. Lots of friends and family came to cheer me on. The support was overwhelming.
