So I broke down and watched the triathlons in the Olympics. I thought popped into my head as I watched. It would be really cool to see some relay teams of specialist from the 3 sports set up to see how fast they could go.

I agree. I think it'd be really interesting to watch. Though my preference would be a sprint or super-sprint distance for a faster more action packed race (and so one leg couldn't gain too large of advantage between countries)

Never will happen. The 2x2 mixed relay on the other hand has a chance.

Each olympic sport has its own governing body. Bringing athletes belonging to 3 different federations under the jurisdiction of the ITU? Not bloody likely.

You could kind of estimate how fast a country could be with a relay team in a non draft legal format if you take their top 1500 m swimmer from the pool (for the men anyway), their top finisher in the cycling time trial, and their top finisher in the 10k on the track.  The 10k run on the track would probably have the highest amount of error though, because it's a mass start race and they don't run all out like a time trial.

I would love to see it. Agree with the above and keep it short.

Obviously not gonna be in the Olympics, but that doesn't change the fact that it'd be fun to watch or just think about

So where are we in getting co-ed swimming relays into the Olympics? That would be must see TV.

I'd only watch it if it were not draft legal.

FINA has them in the Worlds already at both Jr/Sr levels. Not sure about the deadlines for adding events to 2020. They can tweak the qualification process to ensure no additional athletes are added to the games.

Most teams put the male swimmers on the first 2 legs to avoid having women swim through huge wakes.

My wife and I were talking about the Olympic Triathlon event.  First she can't stand bike racing with a peloton, doesn't care for the drafting tri races but likes bike  time trial racing.  Says it comes from years of watching me do tri's and being fast without the bike drafting.  She said they should do a time trial triathlon at the Olympics, everyone out 1 minute apart and fastest times get the medals.  I thought that was a very interesting comment from her!

Would the Brownlee and Jorgensen outcomes be any different in this format?

That was pretty cool. The running swim starts alone make it "must see TV," perfect for the Olympics IMHO.

As mentioned above, mixed relays are already happening at the FINA World Championships. The IOC, however, is reportedly reluctant to add any more swimming medal events to the 34 already offered. That # is second only to Athletics (Track & Field), and nearly twice as many as the the three sports tied for the next highest (Gymnastics, Wrestling, and Cycling @ 18 each).

Me....I'd rather have lacrosse in the Olympics.

It's a sport I think that the US/Canada would dominate for the first few years. But, I think the rest of the world would catch up rather quickly.

It, does after all....have a history as an Olympic sport. At least, in 1904 they played it.

2x2 relay should be in for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Coincidentally they are in April on the Gold Coast, same venue at the WTS Grand Final. This is a slight advantage for those athletes who are eligible to race Commonwealth Games. IE Team GB ( Racing as England, Scotland, Wales, etc), Canada, New Zealand, Australia, heck even Bermuda (Flora Duffy).
