Overcast
Total Time = 6h 01m 4s
Overall Rank = 61/228
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 7/16
Pre-race routine:

Ate muffins at hotel. Drove about 15 minutes to race site. Set up transition. Waited for start.
Event warmup:

Swam a bit in the river to get a feel for the water and current.
Swim
  • 46m 8s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

The tide was coming in, which created a serious current towards shore. On the first leg parallel to the shore, I had to swim on a sharp angle to keep from getting pushed in to the docks. I swam much farther than 1.2 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Pay closer attention to needed swim direction from the start based on the current.
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

There is a 1/4 mile run from the beach to T1. I wanted to be methodical to execute properly rather than quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 2h 52m 29s
  • 58 miles
  • 20.18 mile/hr
Comments:

For races of at least half distance, I need to use more lube. Rte. 5 is a drag strip and should be very fast. I was uncomfortable the last 15 or so miles, so I didn't go as fast as I could have.
What would you do differently?:

Use more lube. Work on bike this off-season.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I put socks on in T2 to try to prevent blisters.
Run
  • 2h 17m 4s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 5 miles were OK. Then, like Raleigh, I fell apart. I need to figure out how to run off the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight. Figure out how to deal with heat.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to get faster on the bike. I need to learn to run off the bike.

Event comments:

I like this course. Most of the issues I had were my own. I need to improve bike and run. Swim current was ridiculous, but everyone had to deal with it. The volunteers were not as good at this race as at most others I've done. Many were not paying attention. Second bike aid station was one guy juggling water and Gatorade. Needless to say, he couldn't handle multiple riders at once.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
